In the most shocking result among the six men’s volleyball PlusLiga games played from Friday to Monday in Poland, Slepsk Malow Suwalki achieved a straight-set home victory over mighty JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj. Meanwhile, table leaders BOGDANKA LUK Lublin and PGE Projekt Warsaw celebrated important wins to break away at the top of the current standings.

Bulgarian outside hitter Asparuh Asparuhov was on fire in Slepsk Malow Suwalki’s 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 26-25) shutout of JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj. He spiked 15 points at a 71% success rate and put away two aces and a kill block towards a match-high 18 points. Opposite and captain Bartosz Filipiak added another 15 points, including one ace, and was named match MVP (Most Valuable Player). Middle blocker Jan Nowakowski also reached the double digits on the winners’ side with 10 points, including two blocks and an ace. Outside Nicolas Szerszen was Jastrzebski Wegiel’s most prolific scorer with 16 points, all in swings. Slepsk Malow, who trailed bottom just a few weeks ago, are now up in 10th place on 14 points and a 4-10 win-loss record. 2024-2025 regular season winners Jastrzebski Wegiel are running eighth on 24 and 9-5.

Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski and Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa also scored important home victories in the race for avoiding relegation and improved to 11 and 3-11 each, in 11th and 12th place, respectively, leaving their visitors – InPost ChKS Chelm and Barkom Kazhany Lviv – at the bottom of the standings, in 14th and 13th place, respectively, on 10 and 3-11 each. On Monday evening, Cuprum Stilon nailed a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-20) shutout of Chelm with a match-high 17 points from Brazilian opposite and match MVP Chizoba Neves. On Saturday evening, Steam delivered a 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20) home win over the Ukrainian team with a match-high 21 points from Iranian outside and match MVP Miland Ebadipour.

Saturday’s big clash between ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle and BOGDANKA LUK Lublin offered a five-set battle that went 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11) the way of the visitors from Lublin. Cuban-born star outside Wilfredo Leon led the way with 28 points, including two aces and two blocks, towards the defending champions’ success, while setter Marcin Komenda picked up the MVP award. ZAKSA are now seven points away from the playoff zone, in ninth place on 17 and 5-9. Lublin top the table on 32 and 11-3, one point clear of second-placed Projekt.

PGE Projekt Warsaw did not shy away from producing a solid 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) sweep of their home game against FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship bronze medalists Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie on Saturday afternoon. The squad from the Polish capital was fueled by outside Bartosz Bednorz with a match-high 18 points and steered by playmaker Jan Firlej, who earned the MVP recognition. Aluron are now four points behind Projekt in the standings, in third place on 27 and 9-5.

In Friday’s leg opener, Energa Trefl Gdansk achieved a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 27-25) home victory over Asseco Resovia Rzeszow to narrow the distance between the two in the table down to two points. Trefl moved up to seventh place on 24 and 9-5, while Resovia stand sixth on 26 and 9-5. Opposites Aliaksei Nasevich of Trefl (three aces, two blocks) and Karol Butryn of Resovia (one block) shared the top scorer honors with 22 points each, while the winners’ American playmaker Joseph Worsley claimed the MVP nomination.

The 15th-leg game between Indykpol AZS Olsztyn and PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow, standing fourth and fifth, respectively, on 27 and 9-4 each, was postponed to March 4 for medical reasons.

The PlusLiga program will continue with two midweek matches of the 16th leg on Tuesday, January 6, and Friday, January 9.
