Interestingly, the 13th leg happens to be a clash between the top half of and the bottom half of the current standings, as each of the eight fixtures features a team from each half.
Two of the opponents that are closest in the table, four positions away, Slepsk Malow Suwalki and Asseco Resovia Rzeszow, will meet on Sunday at 14:45 local time (13:45 UTC). The hosts from Suwalki are in 11th place on 13 points and a 5-6 win-loss record. They have already achieved a couple of upsets this season, those of ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle at home and of Steam Hemarpol Norwid Czestochowa on the road. Resovia arrive at this match on a four-game winning streak (including two matches in the CEV Cup), in seventh place on 20 and 6-6.
“We need every point now, so I think we are well prepared for this match. We want to play the best volleyball we can in Suwalki. This is our goal, to bring back all the points from there, because we lost a few at the beginning of the season, so now we have to make up for it. Our goal is also to advance to the TAURON Poland Cup, and that is what we are focusing on now. The most important thing is to present better and better volleyball in each match.” Bartosz Bednorz, outside hitter of Asseco Resovia Rzeszow
With a game in hand, or a total of four matches to go to midseason, Slepsk Malow Suwalki also have a reasonable shot at qualifying for the cup. Beating Resovia at home could bring them closer to the cut-off line and winning their eighth-leg match at Nowak-Mosty MKS Bedzin on Wednesday might even lift them to the top half of the standings. Currently, Nowak-Mosty are right below them in the table, in 12th place on 10 and 3-8. That postponed game is set to start at 17:30 (16:30).
The PlusLiga marathon starts on Friday, at 20:30 (19:30) with the third from the bottom, 14th-placed Indykpol AZS Olsztyn (on 8 and 2-9), welcoming the third from the top, BOGDANKA LUK Lublin (28, 10-2).
Indykpol AZS Olsztyn will play again on Tuesday in an important match for the race at the lower end of the table. They will visit Ukraine’s Barkom Kazhany Lviv, who are just below them in the standings, in 15th place on 6 and 2-9. 17:30 (16:30) is the starting time of the match.
Barkom Kazhany Lviv, on the other hand, will open Saturday’s PlusLiga programme at 14:45 (13:45) with a visit to mighty ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle, placed sixth on 23 and 7-5.
Also on Saturday, at 17:30 (16:30), PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow, who are right above the cut-off for the national cup, in eighth place on 19 and 7-5, will entertain GKS Katowice, trailing bottom in 16th place on 4 and 1-11.
Sunday’s competition will offer a total of three games. After Slepsk v Resovia, Nowak-Mosty MKS Bedzin will host Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie at 17:30 (16:30). Aluron are in fourth place on 28 and 9-3.
Then, at 20:30 (19:30), PSG Stal Nysa, fourth from the bottom, on 9 and 2-10 in 13th place, will welcome defending champions and table leaders Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj (31, 10-2).
The 13th leg will end with two matches on Monday. Trefl Gdansk will try not to fall behind in the race for the top eight as they entertain PGE Projekt Warsaw at 17:30 (16:30). The hosts are in 10th place on 15 and 4-8, while the visitors from the capital are second on 28 and 10-2.
Following at 20:30 (19:30), there will be another match between teams that are relatively close in the table. Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski, who top the second half of the table, on 17 and 7-5 in ninth place, will host Steam Hemarpol Norwid Czestochowa, standing fifth on 23 and 9-3.
