German Alfredo Gomez has not been with the team that long, but was able to come in and do an excellent job, leading Argentina to another final four finish at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship.

Gomez started off slow in the first two matches against co-semifinalists Bulgaria and Iran, but in Argentina’s match against Brazil, he scored in double figures and followed it up with a 28-point performance against Belgium.

The 20-year-old found his rhythm and continued to produce double-digit performances in the succeeding matches.

“I was selected to the Argentina national team about a year and a half ago, at age 19. And since then I have played in competitions like the South American Games and now, in this U21 World Championship.” Gomez said.

“Being part of the national team is really something that all volleyball players dream of.”

He was introduced to the sport when he was 14 and wants to achieve big dreams for his country.

“I started playing volleyball at 14 years old after my sister got me started in the game. I was discovered in a tournament by one of our volleyball clubs in Argentina, Mutual Policial Formosa, where I began to play in the national league,” Gomez narrated.

“I really fell in love with the game. I will continue to work hard to progress in my career. Next season, I will play in Montpellier in France’s Ligue 1. I am only on the U21 team now, but I want to play on the senior national team. I want to win a World Championship for Argentina, as well as a gold medal in the Olympic Games someday.”

But the young opposite knows that he must work hard on his skills to become the best player and achieve his dream.

“I have to work hard to be the best player I can be. I need to work on my reception, blocking and also on my mentality. I hope to be one of the strongest players in volleyball,” he said.

Among the players he looks up to is his compatriot, Olympic bronze medallist and setter Luciano De Cecco.

“One of my favourite players is Luciano De Cecco. I love his game. He is so talented, and he is such an important player in volleyball history.”
