Defending champions Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano overcame arguably their biggest challenge to date in the 2024-2025 Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà season on Sunday, sweeping last year’s runners-up Savino Del Bene Scandicci in front of their home fans.

With seven wins in as many matches and just one set dropped, the Panthers continue to cruise in the Italian League, currently holding a four-point advantage (21 to 17) over second-placed Numia Vero Volley Milano. Scandicci are now fourth, with 12 points (four wins, two losses).

Conegliano continued to dominate their matches against Scandicci in the Italian League, getting to their 28th victory in 34 encounters by taking their opponents down 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 30-28) in front of a sold-out crowd of over 5,000 fans in Villorba in the only sweep of the weekend.

Star opposite Isabelle Haak, the match’s top scorer with 27 points (all in kills), and Brazilian national team captain Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães, the match MVP, who scored another 19 (17 kills, two blocks), including the game-winner, led Conegliano in a dominant performance.

“I thought we played very well in the first two sets,” Olympic champion libero Monica De Gennaro said. “We were ready for a very difficult match and entered the court with the right mentality. And the crowd was fantastic, as usual. In the third set, when we were struggling, they gave us a big push. It was an important victory for us but we won’t stop here.”

Scandicci centered their offense around Olympic champion opposite Ekaterina Antropova, who almost matched Haak’s production with 26 points (24 kills, one block, one ace). She was, however, the only player in the team to get to double digits in scoring – outside hitters Britt Herbots and Kara Bajema added eight points each.

“I thought that we could have won if we had done a little bit better in some situations,” Herbots reacted. “It’s a shame that we managed to make strong comebacks in the last two sets, but in the end, we lacked something. There are many things we still need to work on, but playing a team as organized as Conegliano is never easy.”

Busto continue to rise

Also on Sunday, Eurotek Uyba Busto Arsizio continued in excellent form, securing their third-straight victory in the Italian League, which elevated them to eighth place with eight points (three wins, three losses).

Playing at home, they overcame tenth-placed Wash4Green Pinerolo 3-2 (22-25, 29-27, 25-13, 20-25, 15-8) with 25 points scored by outside hitter Rebecca Piva.

On Saturday, in the first match of the sixth leg, second-placed Milano topped 14th-placed Bartoccini-MC Restauri Perugia 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17). Olympic champion outside hitter Miriam Sylla was their leading scorer with 17 points, two more than Serbian middle blocker Hena Kurtagić.

Third-placed Igor Gorgonzola Novara also triumphed, counting on 17 points from American opposite Taylor Mims and 16 from Japanese star outside hitter Mayu Ishikawa to defeat ninth-placed Il Bisonte Firenze 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18) on the road.

Completing the schedule, 11th-placed Honda Olivero Cuneo triumphed 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-22) against 13th-placed SMI Roma Volley, sixth-placed Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri ’76 topped 12th-placed Cda Volley Talmassons Fvg 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-10) and fifth-placed Bergamo defeated seventh-placed Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-20).

The seventh leg of the regular season in Italy will be held next weekend, with one match on Saturday and six on Sunday.
