On the wings of a dominant effort in offense, Valkyries put together a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 26-24) shutout of Zamalek, although the battle on the court in Brazil was much tougher than the score may suggest, especially in set three, when the Egyptian team broke away with a 19-13 lead and were the first to reach set point before Valkyries turned things around with three points in a row and shaped up their historic success with an ace by outside hitter Charitie Luper for the match winner.

It was one of eight serving points the American team scored, against four from Zamalek. The biggest difference, however, was made in attack, as Valkyries fired as many as 58 spike kills against only 28 from their African opponents. Luper authored 18 of those at a 56% success rate and, in addition to a couple of aces, tallied up a match-high 20 points towards the victory. Opposite Naya Shime added 13, while middle blockers Natalie Foster (three aces) and Kazmiere Brown chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Zamalek stayed competitive thanks to a great extent to Valkyries’ unforced errors. The team from Orlando made as many as 24, while their rivals from Giza committed only eight. The African side also outperformed the Americans in net defense by 5-2 in kill blocks. Three of those stuffs were delivered by 21-year-old opposite Toqaallah Eassa (Tokka), who led her team’s scoring effort with a total of 11 points.

Next on the Club World Championship program is the de facto final for the first place in the same pool, between the two undefeated teams that have already secured passage to the semifinals – Italy’s Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano and Brazil’s Dentil Praia Clube Uberlandia, serving off at 13:30 (16:30).
