Host Country: Bahrain
In 1987 the Gulf Island state hosted the FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship, a year when Korea topped the podium having beaten Cuba in the final and when the USSR won bronze.
Volleyball was first played in the Kingdom in the 1950’s and the Bahrain Volleyball Association was formed on December 19, 1974 with the late Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Fares Al Khalifa named president.
The BVA joined the Arab Volleyball Organization in 1975 and since 1991 it has been the home of the AVO headquarters. A year later in 1976 the BVA became a member of the FIVB and the Asian Volleyball Confederation.
Since 1995 Bahrain has been the location of the FIVB Middle Eastern Volleyball Development Centre.
In 1997, Bahrain showcased for the second time the FIVB Men U21 World Chamionship for the first time, and 20 years later, in 2017, hosted the FIVB Boys U19 World Championship.
Host City: Manama
Manama is the capital and largest city of Bahrain. Long an important trading center in the Persian Gulf - has been at the center of major trade routes since antiquity - Manama is home to a very diverse population.
Although the current twin cities of Manama and Muharraq appear to have been founded simultaneously in the 1800s, Muharraq took prominence due to its defensive location and was thus the capital of Bahrain until 1921. Manama became the mercantile capital and was the gateway to the main Bahrain Island.
In the 20th century, Bahrain's oil wealth helped spur fast growth and in the 1990s a concerted diversification effort led to expansion in other industries and helped transform Manama into an important financial hub in the Middle East. Manama was designated as the capital of Arab culture for the year 2012 by the Arab League.
