The Dutch pairing of Jara Both, a semifinalist of the 2025 edition of the U18 World Championship, with Matilda de Groot, both 16 years old, stormed Pool A with two straight-set wins. First, they hammered out a 2-0 (21-9, 21-19) shutout of Poland’s Zuzanna Legien & Aleksandra Wolny, and then, they followed up with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) victory over Chile’s Josefa Dawson & Valentina Vasquez.
Seeded on top of the women’s bracket, enjoying the support of the home crowd in the stands, and especially after this solid start, are they already starting to feel they are the favorites to win this competition?
“Well, not really favorites, but I think it does give us confidence,” Matilda de Groot told the FIVB. “I do think we definitely have a chance of getting far in the tournament, but I wouldn’t say we are going to win the whole thing…”
“… but maybe we are, maybe we are” Jara Both jumped in. “If we keep fighting every point as we did today, because we had a tough start, then we will go far in the tournament I believe. We are really happy with the energy of the audience, because it’s also our family and friends, so let’s keep going!”
China’s Qi Siyu & Zhuang Ming also achieved two straight-set victories over the Chilean and the Polish opponents in that pool and guaranteed themselves advancement to the knockout rounds. On Friday, Both & De Groot and Qi & Zhuang will lock horns for the first place in the pool and direct passage to the eighthfinals.
Pool H offered a really interesting day of matches in the Hague on Thursday, with three of the five games decided in tie-breaker third sets. Switzerland’s Anja Gahwiler & Noemi Eugster persevered through two of those, and after beating Argentina’s Angeles Frascaroli & Isabella Garcia by 2-1 (21-17, 17-21, 15-7) and USA’s Sienna Castillo & Simrin Adams by 2-1 (22-20, 18-21, 15-11), they reserved their place among the last 24 of the tournament.
Latvian qualifiers Paula Krieva & Estere Zakite, seeded 26th in the 32-team main draw, continued their successful march they started on Wednesday, with two straight-set wins in their Pool G on Thursday – 2-0 (21-9, 21-19) over Canada’s Julia McDougall & Natalia Casas and a nail-biting 2-0 (22-20, 25-23) over Venezuela’s Valeria Moreno & Mariana Chacin.
Second-seeded Lauren Leach & Janie McCanna of the United States in Pool B, third-seeded Simone Vervloet & Tes Waegeneers of Belgium in Pool C, and fourth-seeded Anna-Chiara Reformat & Sandra Otte of Germany in Pool D, also delivered two straight-set wins each to make sure they continue to the knockouts. So did Paraguay’s Sofia Martinez & Clara Naomi Torres in Pool D and set up a head-to-head encounter with the Germans for the first place in the pool.
In Pool F, sixth-seeded Leticia Schwalb Machado & Kiara Vitoria Ernesto Jeronimo of Brazil lived up to their ranking and picked up two wins on the first day, but got pushed to a tie-breaker resolution by Ukrainian qualifiers Mariia Shkurat & Marharyta Vapniar, before battling out for a 2-1 (15-21, 21-14, 15-8) comeback.
In the very last match of the day, two undefeated teams – Mexico’s Celia Lopez & Angela Perez and Brazilian qualifiers Clara Vieira Lawrenz & Luisa Ianegitzv – crossed swords in a battle for a second win in Pool E, hence a ticket to the elimination rounds. After a three-set duel, Clara & Luisa triumphed with a 2-1 (21-14, 11-21, 15-9) victory.
The third leg of women’s pool action will serve off on Friday at 12:20 local time (10:20 UTC).
