Puerto Rico NORCECA

Navas and Gonzalez were the surprising winners of the NORCECA World Qualifier

The North, Central America and Caribbean (NORCECA) Volleyball Confederation has determined the four countries in each gender that will represent the region at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship 2023 this week, during the NORCECA World Qualifier, held in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic.

The nations that occupied the top four spots in the men’s and women’s tournaments were each awarded a spot at the World Championship, with the United States and Canada qualifying on both genders, Cuba and Nicaragua securing their places in the men’s event and the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico booking their tickets among the women. The teams that will occupy the berths will be determined by each country’s national federation ahead of the event’s entry deadline.

Cuba ended up as the winners in the men’s tournament, with Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour regulars Jorge Alayo and Noslen Díaz dominating Nicaragua’s Ruben Mora and Dany López to secure a straight-set victory (21-12, 21-10) in the gold medal match.

The bronze medal match in Punta Cana had Canadians Sam Schachter, a Rio 2016 Olympian, and Dan Dearing overcoming Americans Andy Benesh and Miles Partain, who took bronze at last weekend’s Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in Ostrava, by forfeit.

The women’s event had Puerto Ricans Allanis Navas and Maria Gonzalez standing at the top of the podium after their surprising 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-11) victory over Americans Kelley Kolinske and Hailey Harward in the gold medal match.

Canadians Sophie Bukovec, a silver medallist at last year’s World Championship, and new partner Shanice Marcelle were third after they defeated the home team of Bethania Almanzar and Julibeth Payano in the two-set (21-19, 21-11) bronze medal match.

The 2023 Beach Volleyball World Championship will be held in Tlaxcala, Mexico, from October 6-15, featuring 48 teams in each gender.
