The final day of pool play for the women at the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships had a handful of exciting matches and one of them featured Swiss Olympians Nina Brunner and Tanja Hüberli.

The reigning European champions played their first tie-breaker so far in Tlaxcala, Mexico, to defeat Latvians Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova and advance to the Round of 32 as the top team in Pool G.

The Swiss, who had comfortably overcome Ecuadorians Karelys Simisterra and Ariana Vilela and Argentineans Ana Gallay and Fernanda Pereyra in their first two matches in the event, played the fellow Europeans, who were also undefeated, at the Tlaxcala Bullring.

A rematch of the 2022 European Championship final, the duel had teams winning by the minimum difference of two points in each of its three sets, with the Swiss securing a 2-1 (21-19, 23-25, 16-14) triumph.

“I think we did a good job in pool play,” Hüberli explained. “Our match today was really tough, the Latvian girls also played amazing and it was a real challenge. We’re very happy to finish the pool stage with three wins. Now we’ll relax a little bit and get ready for the playoffs.”

Making their fourth World Championships appearance as partners, the Swiss came very close from winning a medal in Hamburg, in 2019, but had to settle for fourth. In good form after securing their second continental title just two months ago, they expect more tough matches in the elimination rounds.

“Right now, we wait for our next opponents and to see if we’ll have to move to another city,” Brunner reflected. “But, as always, we’ll just try and take it game by game. There’s a lot of good teams here and you always have to play at your best and that’s what we’ll try do to.”

Despite the loss, Tina and Anastasija also advanced directly to the Round of 32, in second place. Ariana and Karelys were third and will need to wait until the completion of pool play to know if they will need to play a ‘lucky loser’ match.

The third Swiss team entered in the event, Esmée Böbner and Zoé Vergé-Dépré caused one of the biggest upsets of the day, taking Dutch Olympians Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam down in two sets (21-19, 21-11), but ranked second in Pool H, below their opponents.

The other nine women’s pool winners in Mexico were Brazil’s Eduarda ‘Duda’ Lisboa/Ana Patrícia Ramos (Pool A), USA’s Taryn Kloth/Kristen Nuss (Pool B), USA’s Kelly Cheng/Sara Hughes (Pool C), Canada’s Brandie Wilkerson/Melissa Humana-Paredes (Pool D), Australia’s Taliqua Clancy/Mariafe Artacho (Pool E), Brazil’s Bárbara Seixas/Carol Salgado (Pool F), USA's Terese Cannon/Megan Kraft (Pool I), USA's Betsi Flint/Julia Scoles (Pool J) and Germany's Svenja Müller/Cinja Tillmann (Pool K).

On Tuesday, just the ‘lucky loser’ round will be played, with eight teams that finished third in their pools playing for the last four spots in the Round of 32, which will be held on Wednesday.
