A record-breaking 16 million fans around the world were wowed by content on Volleyball World’s digital platforms during the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rome.

The records did not stop there either. Across Volleyball World TV and owned social media channels 25 million impressions were recorded from nine million unique viewers – an all-time high for beach volleyball’s flagship event.

The championships, won in style by Norway’s Anders Mol and Christian Sørum and Duda Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Ana Patricia Ramos of Brazil, saw a total watch time of 37 million minutes.

It also saw the biggest broadcast coverage in Beach Volleyball World Championship history with 17 live broadcasters beaming the action on the sand around the globe by the likes of SRF, Rai, CBC, ESPN and ARD/NDR.

Volleyball World CEO Finn Taylor said: “These positive figures further prove fans’ thirst for beach volleyball. We are delighted that the digital engagement levels in our flagship beach volleyball event is showing significant and exciting signs of growth.

“To see the interest in beach volleyball continuing to reach these audiences via new mediums gives us huge encouragement as we strive towards bringing top-class entertainment to more and more fans around the world.

“It goes without saying that we are looking forward to building on this further next year, at the championships in Mexico.”

Innovation serves stakeholders

Throughout the championships, athletes, broadcasters and sponsors were fed tailor-made highlights via artificial video editing program WSC.

WSC uses AI to create highlight content in real-time and publishes it across Volleyball World’s network & its partners, to allow fans to quickly and seamlessly get the best & most relevant match and tournament highlights.

Furthermore, for the first time at a Beach Volleyball World Championship, viewers also had the added value of Volleyball World TV’s partnership with Cue Audio, which saw the integration of fan engagement and trivia, while one of the biggest centralized productions for the event was handled thanks to Volleyball World’s partnership with LiveU.

Taylor added: “With rich and engaging video just a single click away, it has never been easier for athletes and sponsors to push content to their fans. The level of engagement during the championships shows just how valuable these innovative resources have been to help drive interest not only in the event but the players and the sport itself.”
