It is so tight at the top of the women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking that even small things can cause big changes. Latvia’s Tina Graudina & Anastasija Samoilova are back up to the number one spot, reclaiming it from Brazil’s Carol Solberg & Barbara Seixas after the expiration of the points distributed at last year’s Haikou Challenge on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour.

Anastasija & Tina back to number one in the world!
The expiration of 2023 Haikou Challenge points cost Carol & Barbara the first place in the World Ranking

Anastasija & Tina emerged on top of the World Ranking for the first time in their careers three weeks ago, when the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship points expired, but they lasted there only for a week before Carol & Barbara took over after picking up some points at the Joao Pessoa Elite16. However, the Brazilian pair did not last at the top for long either. Two weeks later, the 800 points that came with their Haikou Challenge gold were also dropped from their score and that cost them a net loss of 340 points to a new total of 6,480 and down to a shared third place with Netherlands’ Katja Stam & Raisa Schoon.
Meanwhile, Anastasija & Tina’s score was not affected as their 360-point catch from Haikou (where they did not make the top 16) was not one of their top eight results that counted towards the World Ranking, so on a total of 6,780 points the Latvian duo climbed back up to the top. They are still just 40 points clear of Germany’s Svenja Muller & Cinja Tillmann, who also moved up, to number two.
However, things can change quickly as soon as the next update of the World Ranking on Monday. Neither Anastasija & Tina, nor Muller & Tillmann are taking part in this week’s Rio de Janeiro Elite16, so if Carol & Barbara reach at least the quarterfinals, they will regain their position at the top.
There were no other changes in the order of the women’s top 10 in comparison to last week’s rankings.
The expiration of Haikou points caused only one change in the men’s top 10. USA’s Miles Evans & Chase Budinger, who won the competition in China last November, lost some ground, suffering a net loss of 200 points and descending from number 10 to number 12. Their place in the top 10 was taken by Qatar’s Cherif Younousse & Ahmed Tijan. The top three continues to be made up of Sweden’s David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig, Netherlands’ Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot and Germany’s Nils Ehlers & Clemens Wickler.
