Stam & Schoon, who were initially part of the qualification pool, also made it to the quarterfinals. In their first playoff round match on Friday, the 17th-seeded Dutch duo mastered a 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) shutout of Lithuanian qualifiers Ieva Vasiliauskaite & Erika Kliokmanaite. Then, due to the injury withdrawal of top-seeded Brazilians Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes from their round-of-12 game against Stam & Schoon, the Dutch Olympians advanced further with a forfeit win.
Second-seeded Valentina Gottardi & Reka Orsi Toth will be Stam & Schoon’s next rival. The Italians cruised through their round-of-12 match against American qualifiers Teegan Van Gunst & Piper Ferch to take a 2-0 (21-13, 21-11) victory, with five serving aces by Orsi Toth. Van Gunst & Ferch, however, also emerged as one of the two losing teams who gained passage to the quarterfinals.
The 21st-seeded Americans will now challenge fifth-seeded Tina Graudina & Anastasija Samoilova of Latvia, who put together a 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) round-of-12 win over Lithuanian qualifiers Ieva Dumbauskaite & Gerda Grudzinskaite. Tina led the way with 26 points, including three aces.
Third-seeded Svenja Muller & Cinja Tillmann were forced to a tight all-German battle with Ittlinger & Grune. Both sets of the match were pushed to overtime before Muller & Tillmann could celebrate their advancement with a narrow 2-0 (24-22, 23-21) win. Muller was the best scorer of the game with 29 points under her belt.
