The Canadians celebrate after their victory against Kloth and Nuss in the quarterfinals

Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes continued their impeccable run at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in Ostrava, Czechia, on Saturday with another win and are now set to compete in the semifinals of the tournament on Sunday.

The Canadian Olympians will face Americans Terese Cannon and Sarah Sponcil in one of the semifinals of the women’s tournament in Ostrava, at 09:00 local time (07:00 UTC), with Brazilians Eduarda ‘Duda’ Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos and Swiss Nina Brunner and Tanja Hüberli meeting for the other spot in the final one hour later. The bronze medal match begins at 13:30 local time (11:30 UTC), with the gold medal match scheduled to begin at 14:30 local time (12:30 UTC).

The Ostrava Elite16 event is just the third of the 30-year-old Brandie and Melissa as partners at the international level and will give the Canadians their first opportunity to fight for a medal together on the Beach Pro Tour after fifth-place finishes in Doha and Tepic. The two have had good success at the American domestic tour, the AVP, winning a gold and a silver in three events.

To make it to the semifinals in Ostrava, the two, who started the tournament on Wednesday’s qualifier, had to win six matches and they did so while dropping just one set. That happened on Saturday, when they faced Americans Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss in the quarterfinals and pulled off a hard-fought, three-set (21-19, 13-21, 15-12) win.

Their next opponents Cannon and Sponcil had as long of a route as theirs, also beginning their campaign in Ostrava in the qualifier. The Americans won five of their six matches in Ostrava so far and prevailed over Swiss Olympic medallists Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana in the quarterfinals with a comfortable 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) victory.

Reigning world champions Duda and Ana Patrícia dropped their first pool match in Ostrava to Latvians Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova, but have been in great form since then, collecting four straight victories to make it to the Final Four in Czechia. Two of these victories happened on Saturday, when the Brazilians topped Americans Julia Scoles and Betsi Flint 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) in the Round of 12 and Germans Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann also in two sets (22-20, 21-16) in the quarterfinals.

Brunner and Hüberli had a similar route, making it to the semifinals with four wins after an opening-match upset to Brandie and Melissa. The Swiss had to grind on Saturday, overcoming Dutch Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam in the tie-breaker (13-21, 26-24, 15-12) in the Round of 12 and downing Americans Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes in their two-set (21-18, 21-15) quarterfinal encounter.
