Ana Patrícia/Duda (BRA) vs. Xue/X. Y. Xia (CHN) - Semifinals #8300892

Brazil’s Eduarda Santos Lisboa (Duda) & Ana Patricia Ramos and Sweden’s David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig celebrated victorious at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Joao Pessoa Elite16 and snatched the women’s and the men’s trophies, respectively.

Another Brazilian duo, Barbara Seixas & Carol Solberg, and China’s Xue Chen & Xia Xinyi completed the women’s podium, while Italy’s Paolo Nicolai & Samuele Cottafava and Netherlands’ Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot finished second and third in the men’s tournament.

In a thrilling all-Brazilian final on Sunday, top-seeded Ana Patricia & Duda came back from losing an extended first set against fifth-seeded Carol & Barbara to claim a 2-1 (29-31, 21-16, 15-11) victory and the team’s seventh Beach Pro Tour gold. Their collection also contains two silver and four bronze medals on the Tour, in addition to two FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship podiums. Carol & Barbara added the fourth silver to their Beach Pro Tour showcase, which also has five gold and one bronze medals on display.

In the dramatic first set of the final, the world’s number-one-ranked team were the first to reach set point, but then were in a position to waste and deny a few of those before finally Carol & Barbara edged forward after scoring three in a row for 31-29. The second set was very competitive through 13-13, after which Duda & Ana Patricia broke away and took it by a five-point margin. They stormed the tie-breaker on a 4-0 run and never looked back to triumph as tournament winners. Duda was the best scorer of the match, putting away as many as 32 points, including three aces.

Fourth-seeded Xue & Xia also needed three sets to get the job done in the bronze medal match against second-seeded Taryn Kloth & Kristen Nuss of the United States. In this case, both of the first two sets were decided in the overtime before the Chinese pair prevailed in the tie-breaker for a 2-1 (22-20, 20-22, 15-12) upset.

They recovered from an early six-point deficit to win the first set. In the second, Xue & Xia were 19-16 behind, but scored four in a row to reach match point, only to allow the Americans the next three points and prompt a third-set decider, in which they took control of the scoreboard after 5-5 and pushed forward to celebrate the victory and the team’s third Beach Pro Tour podium, after the Itapema Challenge gold and the Montreal Elite16 bronze earlier this year. Xue led the Chinese team with 24 points in the match, including four aces and four kill blocks, while Nuss delivered the match high of 25 points for the American team.

In the semifinals earlier on Sunday, Carol & Barbara and Kloth & Nuss also engaged in a three-set battle, which finished at 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 15-11) the Brazilians’ way with 29 points from Carol, while Duda & Ana Patricia downed Xue & Xia in straight sets, 2-0 (21-16, 22-20), with a 21-point match high from Duda.

The men’s matches on Sunday were way more straightforward. Second-seeded Ahman & Hellvig were merciless against fifth-seeded Nicolai & Cottafava in the final and hammered out a 2-0 (21-11, 21-18) shutout. Ahman topped the scorers’ chart of the match with 20 points, including two aces, to his name. The reigning European champions added the fifth gold medal to their Beach Pro Tour hardware collection. They have also picked up two silvers and a bronze on the Tour. Nicolai & Cottafava’s Beach Pro Tour collection, on the other hand, now boasts one gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

In the third-place match, eighth-seeded Boermans & De Groot disappointed the home crowd with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) shutout of 11th-seeded Brazilians Andre Stein & George Wanderley. Boermans won the blocking race with Andre by 8-6 in stuffs and produced a match-high 21 points, also including three aces. In the second set, the Dutch managed to come back from a 14-10 lag to find their way to the victory and the second podium on their Beach Pro Tour journey as a pair, after the La Paz Challenge silver in March.

Ahman & Hellvig produced a 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) sweep of their semifinal against Andre & George earlier on Sunday, while Nicolai & Cottafava were even more convincing against Boermans & De Groot to master a 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) shutout.
