Wolosz

Wolosz last wore the Polish national team jersey in January 2020

After two years away from international volleyball, star setter Joanna Wolosz is strongly considering wearing the Polish national team jersey again and her return could take place at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022.

The tournament, which will be co-hosted by her home country Poland and the Netherlands from September 23rd to October 15th, is actually the driving force behind the setter’s likely decision to return to international volleyball after two years.

A three-time Lega Pallavolo vivo Serie A1 Femminile champion with Italian giants Prosecco Doc Imoco Volley Conegliano, and the best setter of the last two editions of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship, the 31-year-old Wolosz last played for Poland in the European Qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics, which took place in January 2020.

“A tournament like the World Championship is already fascinating, but being able to play it in front of my people would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she told Italian website Il Gazzetino Treviso. “If I got the call, I would almost certainly say yes. I also have in perspective the possibility of playing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which is the dream of any athlete.”

The return of Wolosz would be great news for recently-hired Polish national team head coach Stefano Lavarini. The Italian took responsibility for the European team after leading Korea to a fourth-place finish last year in Tokyo and could even call the setter up for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, which will take place from May 31 to July 17.

The decision to hire the Italian was praised by the setter, who believes he can take Polish volleyball to new heights.

“Lavarini is a great coach,” Wolosz said. “I believe his work will dramatically improve the level of the national team and the players. He has shown a lot in his career and will make Polish volleyball grow.”
