After leading the USA against Slovenia, Avery Skinner will be a key player for them against Argentina

A pair of duels involving national teams that won their opening matches on Friday will be the highlight of Sunday, the third day of matches at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, when Pools A, B, C and D will return to action in Thailand.

The encounters involving the United States and Argentina, which started ahead in Pool D, and Brazil and France, the first teams to pick up victories in Pool C, will be a part of the eight-match schedule across the four Thai cities that host the pool phase of the 20th edition of the tournament.

Starting the Olympic cycle that will lead to the LA 2028 Games with a young squad, the Americans had a little bit of a slow start in their first match in Nakhon Ratchasima, dropping a set to World Championship rookies Slovenia, but counted on the scoring power of the Skinner sisters Avery and Madisen, who combined to produce 28 points, to pick back up and win in four sets.

Argentina also needed four sets to claim their first victory in the tournament and get into a good spot to contend for a place in the elimination rounds, coming from behind to beat Czechia. Opposite Bianca Cugno was on fire and led the South Americans with 25 points.

Americans and Argentineans will play at 19:30 local time (12:30 GMT). The national teams have met with their senior teams for the last time at the Tokyo Olympics, when the USA triumphed in straight sets. The Americans won three of the last five duels, and the two Argentinean victories happened in the Pan-American Cup, when their opponents didn’t have their main squad.

Also on Sunday, European rivals Slovenia and Czechia will try to bounce back from their first-round losses and increase their chances of making it to the next round. They will play the first match of the day in Nakhon Ratchasima, scheduled to start at 16:00 local time (9:00 GMT).

Brazil and France meet for the top spot in Pool C

In Pool C, South American giants Brazil will try to build on a promising debut that saw them sweep Greece on Friday to secure a second victory in the tournament and stand alone at the top of the standings. Star outside hitter Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães, who was their top scorer in their victory against the Greeks, will be ready to lead her team to another victory in Thailand.

France returned to the World Championship on Friday after 51 years and delivered a strong performance to overcome Puerto Rico in four sets. The Europeans, who counted on five aces from opposite Iman Ndiaye to produce the historic result, will now look to cause an upset and get one step closer to the Round of 16.

The teams met in the Volleyball Nations League 2025, about six weeks ago, and the Brazilians had to work hard to prevail in five sets, indicating another exciting match could be set to happen on Sunday at 19:30 local time (12:30 GMT) in Thailand.

Earlier, at 16:00 local time (09:00 GMT), Puerto Rico and Greece will get on the court to pursue their first victory in the tournament.

Pool A will also have a pair of matches being held on Sunday in Bangkok, with the Netherlands facing Egypt at 17:00 local time (10:00 GMT) and hosts Thailand battling Sweden at 20:30 local time (13:30 GMT). Thailand sit at the top of the standings with three points after beating Egypt 3-1 in their debut, while the Netherlands are second with two thanks to their five-set victory over Sweden, which collected one point with the result.
