Ukraine (UKR) vs. Cameroon (CMR) women - Pool H #56845394

Ukraine's potent offense gave them an 18-point edge over the Africans

Ukraine’s first victory in an FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship match in over 30 years completed the match schedule of Pool H on Wednesday in Bangkok.

After going down to Japan and Serbia in their first two matches, the Europeans faced Cameroon in their last match at the Huamark Indoor Stadium and didn’t waste the opportunity to end their campaign with a positive result, beating the Africans 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20).

Making just their second participation in the event, the Ukrainians got to celebrate their second World Championship victory ever and their first since 1994, when they topped Italy in a pool play match. With the three points collected, they ended up in third place in Pool H.

Middle blocker Diana Meliushkyna was Ukraine’s top scorer in the historic match with 13 points (nine kills, three blocks, one ace), one more than opposite Anna Artyshuk (nine kills, three aces) and two more than outside hitter Oleksandra Milenko (ten kills, one ace).

“We did a great job to win a World Championship match for our country,” outside hitter Valeriia Nudha reacted. “This is such a big deal. We’re all happy to be here, and it was a big experience for our team. We were able to play well against some of the best teams in the world. Unfortunately, we didn’t get enough points to advance, but it was a great experience.”

Cameroon had the match’s top scorer in opposite Carine Blamdaî, who again stood out for them, producing 14 points, with 11 kills and three blocks.

Blocking, by the way, was the only area of the game in which the Africans were more efficient than the Ukrainians, outscoring them by 16 points to six. The Europeans had the edge in kills (43 to 25) and aces (eight to two) and also made fewer errors (15 to 18).
