Turkish captain Eda Erdem back on the court

Turkiye against Slovenia and USA against Canada emerged as the first two complete eighthfinal match-ups at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Thailand. These two games will be played on Monday, September 1, in Bangkok. In a third-leg Pool E match in Nakhon Ratchasima on Wednesday, between the undefeated teams of Turkiye and Canada, the reigning European champions shut out their North American opponents to finish on top of the pool standings without dropping a single set. Canada took the runner-up spot to move forward to the next round.

With recovered 38-year-old middle blocker and captain Eda Erdem back on court with her team for the first time, Turkiye mastered a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-13) victory over Canada, dominating at the net by 49-35 in spike kills and by 10-5 in kill blocks.

Opposite Melissa Vargas led the way with 16 points, including two blocks and the match-winning swing at the end of the third set. Eda Erdem put away three kill blocks and an ace and spiked at a 64% success rate to finish with a 13-point contribution.

“I am fine and I am really happy to be back with my teammates,” Erdem told VBTV. “Today’s match was very important for us, because when we came here, we said we had to start well. So, we did three in three and we are very proud of that. I like this national team and being on the court is really priceless. We approached today’s game perfectly. The first set was good. In the second set, we kind of decreased our level, but at the end of the set we remembered who we were, and we pushed and we won. In the third set, the bench players also helped us a lot. So, we a very happy to finish to group stage with three wins.”

Canada outperformed Turkiye from the serving line by 3-2 in aces. Middle blocker Nyadholi Thokbuom authored two of the team’s three direct serving points. She raised two kill block and spiked at a 53% success rate to emerge as the only Canadian player in the double digits, with a total of 12 points.

In the last match of the pool, winless Bulgaria and Spain will battle for first victory at Thailand 2025. The game in Nakhon Ratchasima will serve off at 19:30 local time (12:30 UTC).
