Two of the strongest candidates to compete for medals at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in a few weeks, in Thailand, Türkiye and two-time defending champions Serbia faced each other three times over the last days as part of their preparations for the tournament.

Playing at the home, at the Gloria Sports Arena, in Antalya, the Turkish won the first two duels, held on Monday and Tuesday, while the Serbians triumphed in the third and last one, which took place on Wednesday.

The first match was dominated by the Turkish, who won 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-23). The teams agreed to play an extra set and the Serbians came out on top in this one, prevailing 25-21. Outside hitter Ebrar Karakurt, with 17 points (13 kills, two blocks, two aces), and opposite Melissa Vargas, with 15 (nine kills, four aces, two blocks), led the Turkish victory, while outside hitter Aleksandra Uzelac, with 14 (ten kills, two blocks, two aces), and opposite Tijana Bošković, with 13 (12 kills, one ace), were the most productive on the Serbian side.

Using different lineups, the teams met again on Tuesday and the Turkish prevailed again, this time in the tie-breaker (22-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, 18-16). Making her first appearance in the season, Turkish captain and middle blocker Eda Erdem scored 15 points (eight kills, six blocks, one ace) and was her team’s third most productive player, after opposite Derya Cebecioğlu, who tallied 19 (17 kills, two blocks), and outside hitter Hande Baladın, who registered 18 (12 kills, three blocks, three aces). Opposite Vanja Bukilić scored 18 points (14 kills, two blocks, two aces) for Serbia, three more than outside hitter Katarina Lazović.

Both sides brought what’s presumably their best teams to the court for the third and final match and this time Serbia dominated, winning 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 26-24) and also taking the extra set (32-30). Bošković was on fire, registering 20 points (18 kills, one block, one ace), one more than Uzelac, who had 16 kills, two blocks and one ace. Vargas was Türkiye’s leading scorer with 16 points (14 kills, two aces), followed by Karakurt, who tallied 12 (eight kills, four blocks).

In the matches, Türkiye couldn’t count on libero Simge Aköz, who recently underwent surgery because of an injury in her right thumb.

At the World Championship, Türkiye will have Canada, Bulgaria and Spain as their opponents in Pool E, which will be hosted in Nakhon Ratchasima. Serbia will start their campaign in the country’s capital Bangkok, where they will have Japan, Ukraine and Cameroon as their Pool H opponents. The tournament will take place from August 22 to September 7.
