Serbian players pose with their captain on the bench after the match

Back-to-back defending champions Serbia secured their second victory in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship on Monday, sweeping Cameroon, but it was a bittersweet one as team captain and opposite Tijana Bošković left the match with an ankle injury during the second set.

Despite the absence of the MVP of the last two editions of the World Championship, the Serbians were able to continue in a strong rhythm until the end and secure a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-12) victory over the Africans in Bangkok that confirmed their presence in the tournament’s Round of 16 our of Pool H.

The other match of the day in Bangkok was way more competitive and had Japan needing all five sets to come back and top Ukraine 3-2 (25-27, 20-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-11). After the second day of matches, the Serbians, with six points, and the Japanese, with five, are qualified for the Round of 16, while the Ukrainians, with one point, and the Cameroonians, with zero, are set to end their participation in the tournament in pool play.

Bošković started the match against the Cameroonians and scored six points before feeling pain after landing following a block and exiting the match with a right ankle injury during the second set. She got treatment on the bench for the remainder of the match and was cheered on by her teammates after their victory.

Without her, outside hitter Aleksandra Uzelac was Serbia’s most productive player in the match, leading the team with 18 points (16 kills, two aces). Middle blocker Maja Aleksić contributed another 13, with six kills, five blocks and two aces.

“This tournament is a great opportunity for us to enjoy being on the court together and to show what we can do,” Uzelac said after the match. “What we did was enough for today, but we want to play better in the next matches, and we’ll need to do it. We hope it’s nothing serious with Tijana.”

Middle blocker Paule Olomo, with 11 points (six kills, three blocks, two aces), and opposite Carine Blamdaî, with ten (all in kills), got to double digits in scoring on the Cameroonian side.

“We came here today to have fun and enjoy the game because Serbia are one of the best teams in the world,” libero Reine Ngameni. “Unfortunately, we didn’t play in the way we expected, but we’ll keep working hard for the next match. I think we’re doing well in the World Championship.”

In control the entire time, Serbia made their superior quality reflect on the stats, overcoming the Cameroonians in kills (38 to 25), blocks (seven to six) and aces (six to two), besides halving their opponent’s errors (12 to 24).
