Poland and Belgium delivered a rollercoaster battle, in which the western Europeans took the lead in the overtime of the first set, the central Europeans won the next two sets to take control, but the Yellow Tigers battled on and pushed the match to a tie-breaker, which went the way of Poland, 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 15-10).
Poland’s effort in offense (65-52 in successful swings) and in net defense (15-10 in kill blocks) made the difference in this tough duel. Outside hitter Martyna Lukasik led the way with 20 points, including one block and two serving aces. Middle blocker and captain Agnieszka Korneluk impressed with five kill blocks and an ace towards a 15-point tally, matching that of opposite Magdalena Stysiak, who put up two blocks. Poland’s second opposite Malwina Smarzek also reached the double digits with 13 points. Her tally featured two serving points and two stuffs.
“We knew that this Belgian team would put all their heart in the court and they played really, really well. At some moments, we didn’t play our best volleyball and we need to improve, for sure. Hopefully, for the next game we can keep our level always high,” Lukasik told VBTV. “We have to think about improving not only in terms of volleyball, but also in the mental aspect. We just need to be more consistent. That’s what is missing. And I know this team can do it, especially in the toughest games. I am glad we could win this one and we are still in the game.”
Belgium outperformed Poland from the serving line with 10 aces against seven and also made slightly fewer unforced errors during this five-set saga, 25 against 27. Their outside hitter and captain Britt Herbots was above all with a match-high 23 points, including one ace and one block. 22-year-old opposite Pauline Martin added another 19 points, while setter Elise Van Sas delighted the Belgian fans with five aces and three kill blocks towards a 10-point tally.
“Everybody really believed in a big match against Poland today and I wasn’t ready to pack my bag and go back to Belgium. Now it’s all emotions, but when we analyze it in the end, we will find some good things, for sure. Getting this close to a team like Poland is something amazing, but when you get this close, it hurts even more,” commented Herbots in tears. “I think we did a great job. I am really proud of the team. In the fifth set, we were a little bit too shaky. We missed a little bit of experience in some moments. Now it can hurt, but tomorrow we should smile about this. Between the first week of VNL and where we are today, there is a big difference. We’ve been working very hard every single day and, for sure, we will continue to grow in the next few years…”
The eighthfinal round in Bangkok continues on Sunday at 17:00 local time (10:00 UTC) with a game between China and France, followed by the match between Brazil and Dominican Republic at 20:30 (13:30).
