European powerhouses Poland and Germany ended the pool phase of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship on Wednesday in what was arguably the most exciting match in the tournament so far, which had the Polish coming out on top after five intense sets in Phuket.

The number three team in the FIVB World Ranking saved multiple German match points in two different sets before securing a 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 19-25, 28-26, 19-17) victory that kept them undefeated at the end of pool play.

The victory also got the Polish the top spot in Pool G, with eight points, avoiding a duel with Italy in the Round of 16. They will face Belgium instead, with Germany meeting the Olympic champions in the first stage of the elimination rounds, which will have both matches taking place on Saturday, in Bangkok.

Star opposite Magdalena Stysiak was pivotal in the Polish hard-fought victory, topping all scorers with 26 points (23 kills, three blocks) and coming up big for them in key moments of the match. Two other pillars of the team, outside hitter Martyna Łukasic and middle blocker Agniezska Korneluk contributed 15 and 13 points, respectively.

“It was really difficult,” libero Aleksandra Szczygłowska reacted. “I think that we needed to win a match like this to boost our confidence. We were together in the difficult moments and we know that we can do much more when we play like that. We are here with the goal of winning the tournament, so we’re going to need to face the top teams and take the big steps.”

Outside hitter Lina Alsmeier led the German offense with 19 points (17 kills, one block, one ace), followed by opposite Emilia Weske, who registered 18, with 16 kills, one block and one ace.

“It was an amazing match and it’s very sad that we lost it,” outside hitter Antonia Stautz analyzed. “At his level, we can’t waste the chances that we have to finish matches like we did today. Italy will be a very tough opponent, and we’ll need to do it 100 times better against them.”

In a match of tight margins, Germany’s highest number of errors (33 to 22) ended up costing them too much, as they weren’t on the winning side of it despite leading Poland in kills (71 to 61) and blocks (12 to 11). The Polish were more effective from the service line, firing seven aces to three of their opponents.
