Vietnam did not live up to the opportunity to surprise Germany in what was viewed as a direct battle for the second place in Pool G at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Thailand. The Europeans showed no mercy for Asia’s rising power and shut them out in Phuket on Monday to top the current pool standings on a perfect record of two straight-set victories and secure a spot among the best 16 in the world. Vietnam have two losses so far, but are still in mathematical contention for the eighthfinals.

Germany made up for the greater number of unforced errors they made than Vietnam with total supremacy in the other three scoring elements on the way to a convincing 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21) sweep.
The European squad outplayed their Asian opponents in attack (48-33 in spike kills), in blocking (9-2 in stuffs) and in serving (7-2 in aces). Middle blocker and captain Camilla Weitzel was on fire and inspired her team to the victory. She registered a remarkable 79% success rate in offense and put away two aces and two kill blocks to emerge as Germany’s best scorer with a total of 15 points. Outside hitters Hanna Orthmann and Lina Alsmeier chipped in with 14 (two aces, one block) and 13 (one ace, one block) points, respectively, each spiking with 50% success.
Vietnam’s outside and captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy was the only player to reach the double digits on her side of the net, producing a match-high 17 points, all in swings.
The next Pool G match in Phuket, between Poland and Kenya, is set to serve off at 20:30 local time (13:30 UTC). If heavy favorites Poland win this match, they will join Germany into the eighthfinals.
