Eighthfinal 7: USA v Canada

The eighthfinal clash between North American neighbors USA and Canada will get underway at 17:00 local time (10:00 UTC) in the Thai capital.

The last time these two teams met was earlier this season, in the Volleyball Nations League. In a game played in Arlington, they put together a nail-biting battle, resolved only in the overtime of the tie-breaker the way of the American hosts. USA have heavily dominated the head-to-head series with Canada. The last time the northerners managed to beat their opponent was back in 2021, in a NORCEA Championship fixture, and that was also after a five-set drama.

The United States have medaled three times at the World Championships. After their bronze in 1990 and silver in 2002, they finally triumphed with the title in 2014. At the last edition in 2022, they finished in fourth place. Currently, they are the number six team in the FIVB World Ranking, rising to that position after China’s sharp drop with Sunday’s unexpected eighthfinal loss to France. USA qualified for these eighthfinals as the undefeated leader of Pool D. In the first stage of the World Championship, they achieved four-set wins over Slovenia and Argentina and swept their last match against Czechia in straight sets. Avery Skinner was their best scorer in the pool with 43 points across the three matches played.

Canada’s best result at the World Championships was the 10th place they took at the last edition of the tournament in 2022. Now they are ranked 12th in the world. In the first phase of the current edition, the Canadians finished Pool E runners-up after a four-set win over Bulgaria, a five-set win over Spain and a straight-set loss to Turkiye in the deciding match for the first place in the pool. With 46 points to her name, outside Andrea Mitrovic was their most prolific scorer so far.

Eighthfinal 8: Turkiye v Slovenia

The eighthfinal round at Thailand 2025 will come to a conclusion with an all-European encounter between Turkiye and Slovenia, serving off at 20:30 local time (13:30 UTC).

These two teams have not met head to head in official matches since 2014, when they had four encounters in the CEV European League. Turkiye won three of those four matches.

Turkiye are the reigning European champions, but they have never made it to a World Championship podium. In fact, their best result in the history of the World Championships was the sixth place they took in 2010. They also took advantage of China’s fall in the World Ranking to climb up a spot to number five. At Thailand 2025, Turkiye emerged as the only team to go through the pool phase without dropping a single set. In Pool E, they shut out Spain, Bulgaria and Canada to top the table. Their star opposite Melissa Vargas led the team with as many as 50 points scored across the nine sets played.

Slovenia were the only one of the four rookies at this World Championship that managed to advance to the eighthfinals. In Pool D, they took one set from mighty USA, two sets from Czechia, and finally shut out Argentina, which proved enough for the second place in the pool. They have risen five spots in the World Ranking since the start of the tournament in Thailand and are now up in number 20. Slovenia’s 22-year-old outside Fatoumatta Sillah was the best attacker of the pool phase among all who qualified for the eighthfinals. She tallied 59 kills in offense and emerged as the team’s most prolific scorer with a total of 65 points. Eva Pavlovic Mori was the second best setter of the entire first round, while 20-year-old Nika Milosic came third in both the best servers and the best blockers rankings.
