Outside htiter Britt Herbots carried Belgium to victory with a 21-point performance

Belgium ended the third day of matches at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship as one of just two teams to have earned a pair of victories without dropping sets and secured a spot in tournament’s Round of 16.

Playing in Phuket, the Europeans dominated continental rivals Slovakia to produce a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-18) victory on Sunday and sealed the fates of the four national teams competing in Pool B in Thailand.

Olympic champions Italy had a dominant performance against Cuba in the first match of the day in Phuket, triumphing 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-16). With that, Belgians and Italians got to six points and claimed the two Pool B spots in the Round of 16, leaving Slovakia and Cuba, which are yet to win sets in the tournament, with no chances of progressing.

Star outside hitter Britt Herbots led the Belgian offense against the Slovakians, contributing 21 points (18 kills, two aces, one block) in their positive result. Middle blocker Silke Van Avermaet tallied 12, with eight kills, three blocks and one ace.

“This was a really important match for us as we needed to win to qualify for the next round,” outside hitter Nel Demeyer remarked. “We have this challenging goal of getting into the top eight and we’ll fight for it. We’re working very hard and trying to use our strengths to got as far as we can.”

Middle blocker Tereza Hrušecká was the only Slovakian player to get to double digits in scoring, ending the match with 13 points (nine kills, three blocks, one ace).

“I believe in this team and I know we can do much better,” outside hitter Karin Palgutová said after the match. “Matches like this only push us to play harder and to get to another level. We did what we could today. The tournament is not over, so we need to recover mentally and prepare for our next match.”

Dominating from start to finish, Belgium led their opponents in kills (46 to 33) and aces (five to two), besides playing a very clean match, and giving up 11 points in errors to Slovakia’s 19. The Slovakians had the most blocks – eight to five.

The last duels in the pool will take place on Tuesday, with European rivals Italy and Belgium clashing at 17:00 local time (10:00 GMT) and Cubans and Slovakians trying to end with a win at 20:30 local time (13:30 GMT).
