World Ranking leaders Türkiye celebrate qualification to Paris 2024

After the end of the women’s FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifiers on Sunday, seven of the 12 participating teams in next year’s Olympic Games are now known. With Brazil, Dominican Republic, Poland, Serbia, Türkiye, United States and hosts France having already secured their spots at Paris 2024, all eyes now fall on the FIVB Volleyball World Ranking, which will determine the remaining five participants.

The final line-up will be officially known after the end of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 Preliminary Phase, but who would have qualified if the cut-off were today and logically has the best shot at the remaining Olympic vacancies?

To guarantee the principle of universality, the next Paris 2024 participants will be selected from the continental confederations, which do not have a qualified team yet. Three of the continents no longer fall under this criterion as France, Poland, Serbia and Türkiye will represent Europe, Dominican Republic and United States will represent North and Central America and the Caribbean, while Brazil will represent South America.

China are in the best position among all Asian teams. They are currently sixth in the World Ranking, keeping the same place they had at the end of July, after the previous world-level competition. However, during the course of the 2023 AVC Asian Championship and the Olympic qualifications they have lost a net of over 15 points from their record and are down to a new total of 329.65 points. This has allowed Japan, the next highest-ranked Asian team, to narrow the gap down to only 24.56 points. The Japanese dropped one spot down to number nine, but actually net-gained in points over the last two months.

China failed to qualify from the home-based tournament, but are still likely to compete at Paris 2024

Kenya are currently the highest-ranked African team. After an excellent continental championship campaign, which they won to claim the trophy, they have rocketed eight positions up the chart, compared to their spot after the Volleyball Challenger Cup in July, and made it to number 21 in the world on a total of 162.42 points, or 26.73 points clear of Cameroon, the next highest-ranked African team, who are in number 25, also gaining ground (five spots and 13.50 points) thanks to their African Championship bronze.

The remaining three spots at Paris 2024 will go to the three highest-ranked teams, not qualified yet, at the end of the VNL 2024 Preliminary Phase. According to today’s chart, these three teams would be fifth-ranked Italy, ninth-ranked Japan and 10th-ranked Netherlands.

Over the course of the CEV European Championship and the Olympic qualifications, the Italians lost a net of 15.44 points and dropped two positions down the ranking to number five on 338.97 points, overtaken by Brazil, now third on 352.55, and Serbia, fourth on 350.86.

Poland (POL) vs. Italy (ITA) women - Pool C #7071529

The world’s number five Italy are the highest ranked team not yet qualified for next year’s Olympics

Japan are ninth on 305.09 points, followed by the Netherlands on 287.94, or 22.28 points clear of the next closest contender, Canada.

There was no change in the top two positions of the World Ranking, with Türkiye and United States continuing to lead the way. However, thanks to a successful EuroVolley campaign, which ended with a historic continental title and an undefeated run of seven wins at the FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifier in Tokyo, the Turks greatly widened the gap at the top. They net-gained 31.82 points to pile up a 397.46 total, or 38.84 points clear of the Americans. Between July and now, United States improved their total by only 0.17 points, despite winning the Olympic qualifier in Lodz and reaching the NORCECA Continental Championship final.

The only other change within the top 10 was caused by Dominican Republic’s amazing success, winning both the NORCECA Continental Championship and the FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifier in Ningbo. The Queens of the Caribbean netted 39.45 points, enough to overtake Japan into the eighth place on 308.86 points, 3.77 clear of the Asian team.
