The men’s volleyball field at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will start taking form when the Volleyball Olympic Qualifying Tournament takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Xi’An from September 30 to October 8 to confirm the first six teams that will join hosts France in the quadrennial event.

Twenty-four teams are competing, and they are split into three single round-robin pools of eight teams each, where the top two teams of each pool will qualify for Paris 2024.

Expect this first stage to be intense with three strong and diverse groups, led by Brazil and Italy in Pool A, Japan and United States in Pool B, and Poland and Argentina in Pool C.

In Pool A, joining three-time Olympic champions Brazil and reigning world champions Italy in Rio de Janeiro are their VNL rivals Iran, Cuba, Ukraine and Germany, as well as up-and-coming squads Czechia and Qatar.

2023 VNL silver and bronze medallists USA and Japan will be in Tokyo with other VNL squads Slovenia and Serbia, Volleyball Challenger Cup winners Türkiye, African powerhouses Egypt and Tunisia and European crowd-drawer Finland for Pool B action.

Newly crowned VNL champions Poland and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Argentina will play in Xi’An, together with hosts China, the Netherlands, Canada, Mexico, Belgium and Bulgaria for the Pool C competition.

As the host nation, France have secured its place in the men’s and women’s competitions. After the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Brazil, Japan and China, the remaining five places will be filled by selecting the top five not yet qualified teams in the FIVB World Ranking as of the end of the Preliminary Phase of Volleyball Nations League 2024.

To guarantee the principle of universality, these teams are selected as per the following order of priority: (1) teams from continents without qualified teams, and (2) top teams not yet qualified.
