Sarina Koga waves to the crowd on her way out of the South Paris Arena 1

With Japan on the verge of elimination in the women’s volleyball tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympics, the team’s 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-12) win over Kenya, on Saturday, was very likely the last match in the storied career of team captain Sarina Koga.

The 28-year-old star announced in June that the Paris Games would be the last tournament of her career and she said goodbye in a remarkable way, leading the Asians in the match with 16 points. After the match, she was applauded by more than 10,000 fans at the South Paris Arena 1 while, very emotional, she was comforted by her teammates.

“Feeling the support of our Japanese fans here in Paris was amazing,” she said after her final match. “We heard the cheering from the stands in every match and that really encouraged us on the court and gave us more power. I was happy that today, after two losses, we were able to pull ourselves together and fight. Today, I didn't think about being the captain, I just fought as Sarina Koga, who loves volleyball.”

Koga has been one of the pillars of the Japanese national team in the last decade as she joined in 2015 and has ever since played a major role for the Asian side. The Paris Olympics were her second with Japan as she was also a part of the team in their home campaign at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

“We are not going to have our captain going forward, so I think we have to go on a long journey to find who we actually are without her,” middle blocker Airi Myiabe said. “It's going to be very tough but all of us have to stand tall and know what we can do.”

The outside hitter, who is married to her country’s men’s national team superstar Yuji Nishida, helped Japan win gold at the 2017 Asian Championship and also took them to the podium of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 in second place, making it to the tournament’s Dream Team.

Koga also had an accomplished career at the club level, spending almost the entirety of it with the NEC Red Rockets, where she won four Japanese titles and one Asian Club Championship gold medal.
