Italy (ITA) vs. Egypt (EGY) men - Pool B #18264555

Captain Simone Giannelli in action

Italy defeated Egypt in straight sets on Tuesday morning at the South Paris Arena to register their second three-point win at the men’s Olympic volleyball tournament and make a giant step towards the quarterfinals.

Masterfully conducted by their star setter and captain Simone Giannelli, Italy produced a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20) sweep of their Pool B encounter with Egypt and topped the current pool standings on a 2-0 win-loss record, leaving the African team winless at the bottom of the standings.

In a one-sided first set, Italy dominated with their spikes and their serves to open up a wide gap and close it off at 25-15. The second set was quite similar. With outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto on fire, Italy did not leave any doubts over their superiority on the court and once again took a solid lead on the way to a 25-16 win. Inspired by noisy support from the stands, Egypt tried to fight back and stay more competitive in the third set, but to no avail. Eventually, they were able to get back to within two at 22-20, but the European side reacted with three points in a row, crowned by Michieletto’s swing for the 25-20 winner.

Italy’s opposite Yuri Romano was one of the game’s best scorers, contributing 14 points, including one ace, towards his team’s success.

“We are happy. We played well from the beginning though the end. We have six points, so it’s a good start,” Romano said in the mixed zone after the match. “Our next game against Poland will be very tough. We know them very well. When we play against them, they are always good matches. We are teams at the same level, so those who play better will win.”

Outside hitter Daniele Lavia also finished with 14 points, including two aces and a kill block. Michieletto also reached the double digits with 11 points (three aces, one block), while Giannelli led the blockers with three stuffs within a four-point tally. Opposite Reda Haikal was Egypt’s most prolific player with eight points (two blocks).

“It was a good match. We played against one of the best teams in the world,” Haikal told the FIVB. “Of course, we are trying to reach this level, so we need this kind of matches, against these experienced players, in this type of atmosphere and this type of game. This is how we can improve. We already took many steps over the last year, improving in the international ranking and improving a lot of things. Of course, we need to be competing at this level for some time and we could reach a good level ourselves, actually.”
