Daniele Lavia and Gianluca Galassi celebrate the dramatic Italian victory

The best team in the pool phase of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Italy were very close to being eliminated from the men’s volleyball tournament in the quarterfinals on Monday, but mastered an incredible comeback to overcome Japan in the tie-breaker and secure a spot in the semifinals of the event.

Down 2-0 and trailing 24-21 in the third set, the world champions stepped up to gain control of the match in a critical moment and never looked back, pushing all the way to secure a dramatic 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 27-25, 26-24, 17-15) triumph and advance.

The impressive comeback solidifies Italy’s status as one of the top teams in the Olympic scene as the world champions are now set to appear in the semifinals of the Games for the seventh time in their last eight appearances, having won five medals in the period – their only absence was in Tokyo 2020, when they lost in the quarterfinals.

"We're just very happy to have won a match like this," outside hitter Daniele Lavia remarked. "When we were down late in the third set, Simone (Giannelli) stepped up for us with two aces. He's the leader of our team, so we just followed his lead and kept fighting. It was a very difficutl match and we're very satisfied with how we fought for the match. We have faced some of the best teams in the world here and we're happy to be in the semifinals."

The Italian comeback was propelled by strong performances of their outside hitter duo as while Alessandro Michieletto led the team with 24 points (22 kills, two blocks), Lavia produced another 19 (16 kills, two blocks, one ace). Opposite Yuri Romanò also had a solid shift, delivering 19 points as well.

"This was such a difficult match, but we just kept fighting," captain Simone Giannelli added. "Japan played very well in the first two sets, but we felt that we were right there in the second. We stayed in the game, tried to focus on the present and that mentality allowed us to come back and win this incredible match. Going forward, we need to keep this same approach and keept fighting because we know we can fight against anyone."

Japanese superstar Yuki Ishikawa topped all scorers with an incredible 32 points, with 30 kills and two aces. Opposite Yuji Nishida, with 22 points, and outside hitter Ran Takahashi, with 16, were also prominent pieces in the team’s offense.

"We're so disappointed because we were so close to reaching the semifinals," head coach Philippe Blain said. "We dreamed of being able to get a medal, but that won't be the case. We tried to stay aggressive, focused but we were just missing a point."

Statistically, the Italians were only better than the Japanese in blocking, outscoring them by 15 to two in that skill. The Asians got more points in kills (73 to 67), aces (seven to six) and opponent errors (32 to 25).

Last two spots still in play

With their victory, Italy joined Poland in the semifinals of the Paris 2024 Games – the FIVB World Ranking leaders advanced with a four-set victory over Slovenia in the first match of the day on Monday.

The teams occupying the last two spots in the semifinals will be known later on Monday as hosts France meet Germany at 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT), with the winners facing Italy, and the United States battle Brazil later at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT) for the right of playing Poland for a spot in the gold medal match.
