Micah Christenson captained the United States to win bronze in Paris 2024

Paris 2024 bronze medalists the United States may undergo somewhat of a generational change over the next few years as many of the players who took the team to the podium at the French capital earlier this month are currently evaluating the future of their international careers, but captain Micah Christenson is not one of them.

The 31-year-old setter, who made his third Olympic appearance and won his second bronze medal in Paris, has revealed that he wants to be with the United States men’s national team when the country hosts the Games in Los Angeles, in 2028.

“If they’ll have me, I’ll be there,” he said in an interview with Hawaii News Now. “If they’ll have me, I’d love to. It’s in our own backyard and every athlete dreams about finishing their Olympic career in their home country, in front of their home fans, family and friends, so I’d love to be there. We are already qualified as the host country, so there’s not a whole lot of grinding that needs to be done to qualify, but there will be a lot of grinding to medal. That’s a long way ahead, but I’m 100% planning on being there.”

Before fully focusing on Los Angeles 2028, though, Christenson and his American teammates will try to give their country its first world title in almost four decades next year, when the Philippines will host the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship – the USA won their first and only title in 1986.

In Asia, the setter will be able to reunite with the passionate Filipino fans, who made a very strong impression on him earlier this year, during the Volleyball Nations League.

“I’ve played in front of the Filipino fans for the first time this year and they were insane,” the setter revealed. “But Japan has always been one of my favorite places, so I’d say either Japan or the Philippines have the best fans.”
