Wilfredo Leon celebrates the Polish victory over Brazil

FIVB World Ranking leaders Poland trailed twice, but showed strength to come back on both occasions and overcome Brazil in the tie-breaker on Wednesday to secure their second victory in the men’s volleyball tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

With fans from both national teams making the atmosphere at the South Paris Arena 1 feel like a big celebration of the sport, the Polish were better in the decisive moments to pull off a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12) victory and remain undefeated in Pool B.

With five points obtained in their first two matches in Paris, the Europeans are in second place in the pool and will face leaders Italy, who have six, in their last match in the first phase, on Saturday, at 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT) – both teams are guaranteed in the quarterfinals. Brazil earned their first point in the tournament and will need to get the best possible result against Egypt on Friday, at 13:00 local time (11:00 GMT), to maintain their hopes of advancing as one of the two best third-placed teams.

Celebrating his 31st birthday on the court on Wednesday – alongside setter Marcin Janusz, who turned 30 -, star outside hitter Wilfredo Leon was Poland’s main offensive weapon, registering a match-high 26 points (21 kills, three aces, two blocks), including the last two in the tie-breaker, both in aces. Middle blocker Jakub Kochanowski and outside hitter Kamil Semeniuk had 15 and 11, respectively.

"Qualifying today was very important for us," Leon said. "It's not like we're going to relax or anything, but it's good to get this out of the way. We were tested in a lot of different ways by Brazil and that's great for us, especially considering how we managed to continue in our path during the difficult moments and come back at the end. I feel like we're ready for whatever is to come now. Getting those two aces at the end was huge. We play better when our serving is working and I had gotten just one ace at that point and I knew that I needed more than that. I was lucky to have the opportunity of getting to the service line at that moment and was just feeling confident that I could get Brazil uncomfortable."

Middle blocker Norbert Hubert came up big for the Europeans, entering the match during the fourth set to produce seven points, including three aces, in clutch moments for the World Ranking leaders.

Serving was a major factor in Poland's victory as the Europeans outscored the South Americans by 14 points to three in that skill. The Polish also got more blocks (ten to nine), while Brazil led in kills (66 to 62) and got more points from opponent errors (26 to 20).

Brazil had outside hitters Adriano Xavier, who came off the bench, and Ricardo Lucarelli as their main scorers with 18 points each, while opposite Darlan Souza added another 17. Libero Thales Hoss was also huge for them, delivering an impressive 21 digs.

"I think that we wasted some opportunities to score easy points on the fourth set that we couldn't have," Lucarelli reacted. "You typically don't get those chances against a team like Poland very often and we got quite a few, but we couldn't capitalize on them. That's sad, because we had the opportunity to win. Now we put our pieces together and focus on playing Egypt. I honestly think that we played a very good game, being aggressive and fighting for every ball, and that's what we have to do against them. We don't have the luxury of having time to cry and regret and when we won gold in Rio in 2016 we also started with two losses, so all we have to do is keep going forward."

Japan and Argentina play later

Another men’s match will be held on Wednesday at the South Paris Arena 1, with Asian champions Japan and South American champions Argentina meeting at 13:00 local time (11:00 GMT) in Pool C. After dropping their opening matches in the Games, both sides desperately need a win to remain in contention for a spot in the elimination rounds.
