France (FRA) vs. Italy (ITA) men - Pool 1 - Preliminary Phase #47133938

France's Noa Duflos Rossi faces two Italian blockers at the net

Reigning Volleyball Nations League champions France secured their first victory in the 2025 edition of the tournament on Friday, and it was a big one as the Olympic champions took down world champions Italy in one of the most anticipated matches of the week in Quebec.

Using a young squad in the opening week of the VNL, in which just six of the 14 players had appeared in the tournament before their opening match, the French were steadier throughout the match and triumphed 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 19-25, 26-24) at the Centre Vidéotron.

With the victory, the French, who had lost to Argentina in their opening match on Wednesday, collected their first three points in the VNL 2025. Italy, which had earned five points with victories over Bulgaria and Germany, were handed their first defeat in the tournament.

The two Olympic champions who made the trip to Quebec this week, outside hitter Trévor Clévenot and opposite Théo Faure stepped up for the French, leading the team with 13 and 12 points respectively. Middle blocker François Huetz also had a terrific performance, scoring 13 points with seven kills, four blocks and two aces.

France’s starting setter, 19-year-old Amir Tizi-Oualou also had a pivotal role in the team’s victory, scoring the game-winning point with an ace – he ended the match with five points. The Olympic champions were strongly supported by the home fans in the French-speaking city and thanked them at the end of the match.

“The crowd was amazing here,” the setter said. “We got a lot of energy from them during the match, and at times it really felt like we were playing in France. At the end, we talked in the huddle that we didn’t need a hero to win this match. So, I just went conservative with the floater and it worked well.”

Italy, which also kept some of their stars at home in the first week of the VNL 2025, had world champion opposite Yuri Romanò as their leading scorer, with 16 points (14 kills, two aces). Outside hitters Francesco Sani and Luca Porro added 15 each.

“I think both teams played a great game,” Sani reflected. “In the end, we struggled with our passing and gave them some free balls. Their serves were good, but we could have done better. We lacked some clarity and confidence in the final points of each set, and that’s why the match went their way.”

Earlier on Friday, Bulgaria also claimed their first victory in the VNL 2025, beating Argentina 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 28-26).
