Italy (ITA) vs. Serbia (SRB) women - Quarterfinals #19168055

Julio Velasco and Myriam Sylla at the 2024 Olympics

Argentinean coach Julio Velasco, who led the Italian women’s national team to the top of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 podium and to Olympic gold at Paris 2024, announced his extended roster for the upcoming VNL 2025 season. The list of 30 players features as many as 10 Olympic champions.

“These are thirty well-studied names. The core is the same as last year,” Velasco said upon presenting the roster. “I have not called up athletes who have not played as starters (in their clubs) to the A national team, because you have to demonstrate your value on the court to wear the blue jersey. We just need to increase the number of Italian players who play as starters in the top league.

“We are working in the right way. The girls are fantastic and I must say that they are working not just well, but very well. They are good, motivated and have the right attitude. We are working with many groups – the A national team, the B national team that will go to the Universiade, and the youth national teams that are giving us a big hand to fill the missing roles in the various training sessions. We definitely need to give more trust to young people, because they are the ones who bring enthusiasm and we work for this.”

Among the 13 players selected by Velasco for the Paris Olympics, only three are missing from the newly announced roster – outside hitter Caterina Bosetti, middle blocker Marina Lubian and reserve libero Ilaria Spirito.

“As a national team, we need to start a new cycle. We ended with the gold in Paris, but now we need to confirm ourselves in the VNL and at the World Championship, maybe with a little more rotation compared to the players who have been pulling the cart for a long time,” Velasco continued. “Some athletes have not wanted to marry the Italian cause again. I take note of that and if they want to change their minds for a big event like the Olympics, then I will be the one to say no, because it doesn't work like that with me.”

Italy will enter the new season as the number one team in the women’s FIVB Volleyball World Ranking. They will start the defense of their VNL title on June 4 with a remake of the Olympic final against the United States. During the first competition week, they will play in Rio de Janeiro and will also meet Germany, Korea and hosts Brazil. Then, in Hong Kong between June 18 and June 22, Italy will take on Bulgaria, Thailand, Japan and hosts China. In the last week of the preliminary phase, they will play against Belgium, reigning world champions Serbia, Türkiye and hosts Netherlands in Apeldoorn between July 9 and July 13. Should they qualify for the VNL Finals again, they will travel to Lodz, Poland, where the event will take place from July 23 to 27.

At the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, set to take place from August 22 to September 7 in Thailand, Italy will start in Pool B against Slovakia, Cuba and Belgium.
