Van Ryk needed just three points to jump over the 1000-point mark and she achieved that already in the second set of Canada’s hard-fought 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 28-26) win over Bulgaria. The 1.88m-tall striker went on to pile up a match-high 19 points, including one kill block. So, she improved her VNL tally to 1,016 points, the 11th highest in the all-time ranking, one point short of the top 10.
Canada made up for the far too many unforced errors by outperforming the opponents in attack by 55-39 in spike kills and in net defense by 14-8 in kill blocks. Middle blocker and captain Emily Maglio authored as many as six of those 14 stuffs, to which she added four aces and six successful swings to finish with 16 points. Outside hitter Alexa Gray, middle blocker Nyadholi Thokbuom and 20-year-old outside Abagayle Guezen also reached the double digits in scoring with 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively. Unfortunately, Canada’s main setter Brie Fransen suffered an ankle injury during the match, but her substitution Quinn Pelland played an excellent game, conducting her team’s offense to victory.
Bulgaria, the youngest team in the women's VNL 2026, showed their best performance so far in the Thai capital. They outplayed their opponents in serving by 8-6 in aces and made 26 unforced errors, 10 fewer than the Canadians. Middle Borislava Saykova was their leading scorer with four kill blocks and two aces towards a team-high 14 points. Outside hitters Miroslava Paskova and Aleksandra Milanova added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
“We learned that we are very gritty when we need to be,” Thokbuom told VBTV after the match. “It’s just really fun to play with these girls. We know when we have to turn it up and we encourage each other pretty well.”
Canada improved to a 4-2 win-loss record and 13 points to climb to seventh place in the current VNL standings, while Bulgaria are running second from the bottom, in 17th place on 1-6 and 3.
Earlier in the day in Bangkok, the Netherlands mastered a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-20) shutout of Ukraine and improved to 3-3 and 9, taking ninth place in the table. Ukraine are in 13th place on 2-5 and 5. Dutch middle blocker Indy Baijens raised an impressive six kill blocks and spiked at a 71% success rate in attack towards a match-high 16 points. Outside hitter Jolien Knollema and 22-year-old opposite Elles Dambrink added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Sub-in outside Yuliia Dymar was Ukraine’s most prolific scorer with 10 points.
