Poland’s Aleksandra Gryka spikes against Serbia

In the last match of the competition week in the women’s Volleyball Nations League, Poland beat their hosts Serbia in Belgrade on Sunday. With a sparkling contribution from their middle blocker Aleksandra Gryka, they got the job done in four sets and climbed to second place in the current VNL standings on a 7-1 win-loss record and 21 points. The reigning world champions, on the other hand, are still winless at the bottom of the table, in 18th place on 0-8 and 5.

Gryka produced a stunning nine kill blocks towards Poland’s 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Serbia. It was here first appearance on the court this week and she used her fresh energy to take the leading role in steering the team to success. Gryka also spiked very efficiently, at a 67% success rate, to top the overall scorers chart of the match with a total of 20 points, including an ace. Opposite Magdalena Stysiak added another 16 points, all in swings. Outside hitters Martyna Lukasik and Paulina Damaske chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Star middle and captain Agnieszka Korneluk came on as a substitution, but she had the honor to close the match with a speedy first-tempo spike in set four after her team to come back from a five-point deficit.

“It took a lot of cooperation and communication and, for sure, faith that we can do it. We are facing a lot of hard moments in this tournament, but we come out with success. So I’m real proud of my team,” Gryka told VBTV. “I guess today I was rested and very energetic for this game, because of the gym and all the people that came. And playing against Serbia is always a great challenge, so I just enjoyed playing.”

Opposite Vanja Bukilic led Serbia with 18 points, including two kill blocks and an ace, while middle and captain Maja Aleksic made an impressive six kill blocks to finish with a total of 17 points. 20-year-old outside Vanja Ivanovic added another 10 points for the home team.
