Currently in 16th place in the FIVB World Rankings, Ukraine earned the right to replace the relegated Korea in the 2026 edition of the tournament. They fell in straight sets to international powerhouse the United States in their debut on Wednesday, but built on it to upset the 11th-placed Germany on the second day of matches in Canada.
Oleksandra Milenko was a key name in Ukraine's victory. The 26-year-old left-handed outside hitter scored a match-high 22 points (18 kills, three aces, one block), including four in the tiebreaker. Opposite Viktoriia Danchak came next with 17 points (15 kills, one block, one ace), while Germany got 22 points (18 kills, two blocks, two aces) from 19-year-old outside hitter Leana Grozer and another 21 (20 kills, one ace) from opposite Emilia Weske.
"It's an amazing feeling right now," Milenko said. "I almost feel like I want to cry because not long ago we would consider winning a match at this level impossible. Germany came back, but we kept believing in our team, and tried to find the energy to finish strong, and everyone helped each other."
