The vast majority of the players who competed at last year's World Championship will be back with Poland in 2023

Head coach Stefano Lavarini announced the 30 players that are part of his plans and could be called up to represent Poland's national team during the 2023 international season as the list was released by the country’s National Federation.

The coach, who’s starting his second season at the helm of the Polish national team in 2023, will call up players from that group to form the rosters that will compete in the Volleyball Nations League, the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and the European Championship. The training camp with the first players is set to begin on May 8, in Szczyrk.

The list features 13 of the 14 players who represented Poland at home during last year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, with the only exception being middle blocker Klaudia Alagierska-Szczepaniak, who sustained a knee injury during the club season.

All of the team’s key players will be available for Lavarini, including setter Joanna Wołosz, opposite Magdalena Stysiak, outside hitter Zuzanna Górecka, middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk and libero Maria Stenzel.

“This list is just a starting point so we can continue what we started to build last summer with the team,” the Italian coach said in a video statement released by the Polish Federation. “We took into consideration the performances the players had with their clubs during this season but also their backgrounds and perspectives at the international level.”

The top scorer of the VNL in 2018 and 2019, 26-year-old opposite Malwina Smarzek was included in the list and could return to the Polish national team for the first time since the 2021 edition of the tournament.

Poland will start their VNL campaign in 2023 in Antalya, Türkiye, where they will play against Canada, Italy, Thailand and Serbia from May 30-June 4.

“The plan for the VNL is to have the core of the team involved during all three pools in the preliminary phase,” Lavarini added. “But we’ll also make some changes in the squad from one week to another so we can give everyone an opportunity to compete at the highest level and also us a chance to watch them in action.”
