Cai Bin during his first tenure as head coach of China

A 55-year-old Cai Bin returns to the role of women’s national team head coach after leading his country in 2009 and takes over from legendary Lang Ping, who coached China from 2013 to 2021.

Cai is set to mentor the Chinese women as they prepare to take part in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Nations League and FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in the Netherlands and Poland. China finished third in the first two editions of the VNL, but failed to make the podium in 2021. At the last edition of the World Championship in 2018, they took the bronze, after a runner-up finish in 2014.

"I would like to thank everyone for their support. It is an honour, and I will spare no efforts in doing my job. I will work on the roster immediately and my priority is to cultivate a fighting spirit," the former setter of the men’s national team told Xinhua upon his new appointment.

Before his first short-term tenure at the helm of China’s senior team in 2009, when they earned AVC Asian Championship silver, Cai was in charge of the country's junior national team for 10 years leading them to four U20 World Championship medals.

At the club level, he has coached Jiangsu Zenith Steel Nanjing since the 2014-2015 season. Under his supervision, the team won a 2018 Asian Club Championship bronze and four Chinese Volleyball Super League medals, including the 2017 title and, most recently, the 2022 silver.

Previously, Cai also coached Beijing Baic Motor from 2010 to 2013, and Shanghai Bright Ubest from 1997 to 2002 leading their team to two gold medals and a silver at the Asian Club Championships, as well as four national titles.
