Brayelin Martinez serves against Japan as she collects 31 points for the Dominican Republic at the 2021 VNL.

The Dominican Republic's Brayelin Martinez fired off 31 points against Japan on Day 13 of the 2021 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League at Italy's Adriatic resort of Rimini on Friday - though it was just not enough for the 'Queens of the Caribbean' to capitalise on their two-set lead as they fell in five.

The 24-year-old Dominican scored 29 points from attack (29/68 for 43%) and added two blocks for her total of 31.

It is the third time in the history of the VNL that Martinez breaks the 30-point mark.

She had scored 34 points against Thailand in 2019 and 31 against Korea in 2018.

Almost at the same time on Friday at Rimini, Belgium's Britt Herbots was scoring 33 points against Thailand for her personal third entry on the list of players to have scored 30 points or more in a single VNL match.

A total of five players have now scored '30+' at the 2021 VNL with multiple entries from Herbots (3) and China's Zhang Chiangning (2). Zhang still holds the best performance for this season with her 37 points against Belgium.

Poland's Malwina Smarzek holds the all-time VNL scoring with 42 points in four sets against Bulgaria in 2019.
