Loveth Omoruyi

Italy's Loveth Omoruyi hits past the Thai block of Chuewulim Sutadta as she scores 33 points at the 2021 VNL.

Italy's Loveth Omoruyi scored 33 times for Italy against Thailand on Sunday, the closing day of pool play at the 2021 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League, becoming the sixth player to score 30+ this year.

The 19-year-old got 28 kills from 60 swings (47%) and added four blocks and one ace.

Earlier in the competition, Belgium's Britt Herbots had recorded four entries - the latest on Saturday night over Italy with 34.

China's Zhang Changning, with two entries in 2021, still holds this season's high of 37 points from the match against Belgium. She also scored 36 against Brazil.

Other players to have broken the 30-point mark at the VNL this year are Poland's Magdalena Stysiak with 35 against Japan, Russia's Nataliya Goncharova with 31 against the Dominican Republic and the Dominican Republic's Brayelin Martinez with 31 against Japan.

Omoruyi is only the second Italian to feature in the all-time list of players to have scored 30 points or more in a single VNL game, after Paola Egonu who has four entries from 2018 and 2019.

Poland's Malwina Smarzek holds the all-time VNL scoring record of 42 points from her side's 3-1 win over Bulgaria in 2019.

The Italy v Thailand match also saw another record broken. The first set, at 35-33, was the highest-scoring in the history of the women's VNL, breaking the previous record of 33-31 recorded in three matches.
