ŁKS Commercecon Łódź got to the midpoint of the 2024-2025 Polish Women’s Tauron Liga as the top team in the country after they took crosstown rivals PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź down on Friday, in the 11th and final leg of the first round of the regular season.

The duel between the top teams in the country lasted less than many would expect as Commercecon produced a flawless performance to secure an emphatic 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) victory over their rivals and leapfrog them in the standings.

As the two Łódź teams entered the match tied in points, Commercecon now have a three-point lead over their rivals, getting to 28 (nine wins, two losses). Budowlani, who have 25 (eight wins, two losses), had one match postponed and will play 12 times before the end of the regular season, one more than their rivals.

Polish national team outside hitters Zuzanna Górecka and Natalia Mędrzyk led Commercecon’s victory with outstanding performances. While the 24-year-old Górecka topped all scorers with 16 points (12 kills, three blocks, one ace), the 32-year-old Mędrzyk, a Paris Olympian, registered 15 (14 kills, one ace) and took home the match’s MVP award.

“We certainly didn’t expect the match to turn out this way,” Górecka commented. “We prepared to deliver a very strong performance and I’m really proud of the team because we were able to execute everything we planned. We were coming from a very bad performance against Bielsko-Biała and we knew that we needed to remain focused from start to finish because a quick moment in which we slowed down could cause us problems.”

Budowlani had their international outside hitters – Serbian Jelena Blagojević, with 11 points, and Slovenian Lana Ščuka, with ten – as their most productive players.

“The atmosphere was amazing and we wanted this to be a very special day for the city of Łódź,” Blagojević said. “It was a very important match for both teams and unfortunately, I felt we were never able to show our game. From the first point, we seemed a little distracted and it never changed. Nothing we tried to do really worked and they played a great match.”

Bielsko-Biała keep winning

The 11th leg of the Tauron Liga started on Thursday and fourth-placed BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała added three more points to their total, elevating it to 24, with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) victory over MOYA Radomka Radom. On the same day, #VolleyWrocław won the battle for fifth place with UNI Opole, winning the match 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-13) and getting to 15 points.

The remaining three duels will all be played on different days, with third-placed KS DevelopRes Rzeszów facing ninth-placed Chemik on Saturday at 12:30 local time (11:30 GMT), tenth-placed Energa MKS Kalisz meeting 12th-placed ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec on Sunday at 16:00 (15:00) and eighth-placed Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz going against 11th-placed Sokół & Hagric Mogilno on Monday at 17:30 (16:30).
