Commercecon and DevelopRes go for the top in Poland

With league leaders PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź out of action this weekend, two teams will be vying for the top spot in the standings of the Polish Women’s Tauron Liga during the seventh leg of the regular season.

Third-placed KS DevelopRes Rzeszów, who play on Saturday, and second-placed ŁKS Commercecon Łódź, who will be on the court on Sunday, are the two sides that can benefit from the leaders’ absence and jump to the top of the standings over the weekend.

Only four matches will be held this weekend in Poland, as fifth-placed MOYA Radomka Radom and ninth-placed ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec had their duel anticipated to last week, while fourth-placed BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała and leaders Budowlani will only meet at the end of December.

Tied with Budowlani in the Tauron Liga standings with 16 points (five wins, one loss), crosstown rivals Commercecon have the most straightforward path to end the weekend in first place in Poland. In order to do it, they need to beat 12^th-placed Sokół & Hagric Mogilno 3-0 or 3-1 on the road on Sunday, at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT).

“We are still getting to know each other,” setter Marlena Kowalewska said. “This is an entirely new team, which has never played together before, so I think that week after week, we’re getting better. We want to win matches and we’ve been training very hard to do it. We want to play well and fight for the title.”

DevelopRes also target the top

The only undefeated team in the Tauron Liga, DevelopRes are currently in third place, with 15 points (six wins), and will play on Saturday, at 12:30 local time (11:30 GMT), against eight-placed Energa MKS Kalisz. To move up to first place, they need to win 3-0 or 3-1 and hope Commercecon drop points or win 3-2 and see their rivals lose the match against Mogilno.

“Energa are a brave team and they’ve been causing problems to higher-ranked opponents, so we’ll need to be ready,” said Dutch outside hitter Marrit Jasper. “Starting the match well and remaining focused will be very important. Teams come to Rzeszów with nothing to lose, so we must throw all our power into the court.”

Two other matches will be held on Sunday, with sixth-placed UNI Opole hosting 11^th-placed Lotto Chemik Police at 17:30 local time (16:30 GMT) and tenth-placed Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz facing seventh-placed #VolleyWrocław three hours later.
