The last two teams to win the Polish Women’s Tauron Liga, LOTTO Chemik Police and ŁKS Commercecon Łódź will meet on Friday, in what should be the most exciting match of the fifth leg of the second round of the regular season.

Set to start at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT), in Szczecin, the match will reunite two teams inside the qualification zone for the playoffs, but with different aspirations for their remaining regular season matches.

Currently in seventh place with 17 points (five wins, nine losses), defending champions Chemik are keen on securing their spot in the postseason, but they have just three points more than ninth-placed Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz, the first team below the line.

With two victories and seven points earned in their last three matches, Chemik significantly improved their situation and they want to continue getting points against Commercecon.

On Friday, the serving power of outside hitter Anna Fiedorowicz, the second player with the most aces (20) in the Tauron Liga, and the presence of middle blocker Dominika Pierzchała, who ranks second in blocks with 56, will both be instrumental as they try to make Commercecon uncomfortable.

Ranked third in the Tauron Liga with 37 points (12 wins, two losses), Commercecon are eyeing the top spot in the standings at the end of the regular season and they depend only on their own efforts to reach it as they have one game in hand to the two opponents that appear higher than them, league leaders KS DevelopRes Rzeszów and second-placed PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź, who both have 39 points.

Commercecon won ten of their 11 most recent matches, including the last four, and scored points in ten of them. With that in mind, getting all three points against Chemik would be critical for their push to first place.

The team will have good weapons to counter Chemik’s strong serving in libero Maria Stenzel and outside hitter Zuzanna Górecka, who rank first and fifth in passing efficiency with 56.10% and 51.52% respectively. Offensively, Ukrainian opposite Anastasiia Hryshchuk ranks fourth in the league with 225 points, while middle blocker Anna Obiała is third in aces with 18.

Chemik and Commercon are two of the most traditional and successful women’s teams in Poland - they combine for 14 national titles and won the 11 editions of the Tauron Liga, with nine Chemik titles and two Commercecon victories in the period.

The teams have met 21 times over the years and Chemik have the most wins, leading their opponents by 12-9. The Łódź side came out on top when the teams met for the last time, however, triumphing 3-0 in the first round of the current season, back in October.

First match on Thursday

Friday’s match between Chemik and Commercecon will be the second of the week in the Polish League. The day before, 11th-placed ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec host fifth-placed UNI Opole at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT).

Saturday’s match schedule features just one match – Budowlani vs. MOYA Radomka Radom, at 12:30 (11:30 GMT) – while Sunday will have a pair of duels, with Pałac meeting BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała at 17:30 (16:30 GMT) and Energa MKS Kalisz facing Sokół & Hagric Mogilno three hours later.

League leaders DevelopRes will appear in the last match of the weekend, on Monday, as they go on the road against #VolleyWrocław at 20:30 (19:30 GMT).
