After three weeks, PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź are back in first place in the Polish Women’s Tauron Liga. The team did its homework, winning their match in the tenth leg of the regular season, and benefited from a defeat by crosstown rivals ŁKS Commercecon Łódź to return to the top of the standings.

When Budowlani got on the court on Monday, in the last match of the weekend, they knew a victory would be enough to get them back in the first place and they went for it, topping defending champions LOTTO Chemik Police 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21) on the road.

With the result, despite having one match in hand, they caught Commercecon at the top of the standings with 25 points (eight wins, one loss), but have the edge in the set ratio. The top four of the Tauron Liga is now strongly consolidated, with KS DevelopRes Rzeszów coming up in third place with 24 points (nine wins, one loss) and BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała appearing in fourth place with 21 (seven wins, one loss) and two matches in hand.

Polish outside hitter Karolina Drużkowska led Budowlani’s offense against Chemik, leaving the court with 21 points (20 kills, one ace). Italian opposite Terry Enweonwu came next, with 17 (16 kills, one block), while libero Justyna Łysiak took home the match’s MVP award after she registered 22 digs and 17 passes.

Chemik’s captain and outside hitter Martyna Grajber-Nowakowska also played at a high level, leading her side with 21 points, all in kills. Middle blocker Dominika Pierzchała was the team’s next best scorer, with 14 points (seven kills, seven blocks).

Bielsko-Biała upset Commercecon

Budowlani’s return to first place had a big help of Bielsko-Biała, who took Commercecon down when the teams met on Saturday, paving the way for the movement in the standings. Playing on the road, they were dominant, defeating the then-leaders 3-0 (25-20, 30-28, 25-22).

With 16 and 13 points respectively, outside hitter Julita Piasecka and Estonian opposite Kertu Laak played major roles in the result. Outside hitter Anna Obiała scored 14 points for Commercecon.

The tenth leg of the Polish League started on Friday, with #VolleyWrocław overcoming Energa MKS Kalisz 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-11, 25-17). On Saturday, Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz topped ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14).

Two matches were held on Sunday, with DevelopRes beating UNI Opole 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 25-14, 25-12) on the road and Sokół & Hagric Mogilno celebrating their second triumph in the season, a 3-2 (25-20, 26-28, 26-24, 22-25, 15-8) victory over MOYA Radomka Radom.

The 11th leg of the regular season in Poland begins on Thursday and will have six matches until its completion, on Monday.
