After losing the first match in straight sets, on Sunday Denso Airybees Koriyama produced a five-set upset of defending champions Osaka Marvelous. Outside hitter Kotona Hayashi and Belgian opposite Lise Van Hecke led Osaka to a 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-15) shutout of the home team on Saturday with a team-high 14 points each. Brazilian opposite Rosamaria Montibeller was the best scorer of that match with 18 points for Denso. In the second game, however, Airybees stung back with a 3-2 (26-24, 16-25, 11-25, 25-23, 15-7) victory and put an end to Marvelous’s six-game winning streak. This time, Rosamaria led the winners with 26 points, including four kill blocks. Her compatriot, outside hitter Sabrina Machado, added another 22, while a 28-point tally propelled Osaka’s outside Ameze Miyabe to the top of the match scorers chart. Osaka kept their fourth place in the current standings, now on a 12-6 win-loss ratio and 39 points. Denso occupy eighth place on 9-9 and 27.
Second-placed Saga Hisamitsu Springs were stunned by their visitors PFU BlueCats Ishikawa Kahoku, who put an end to Saga’s 13-game winning streak on Saturday. Despite an impressive 31 points, including five kill blocks, by Saga’s American opposite Stephanie Samedy, PFU produced a 3-1 (27-25, 25-17, 15-25, 25-18) upset with their opposite Melissa Valdes contributing a team-high 21 points, including three blocks. In a nerve-wracking duel on Sunday, PFU forced their hosts to the overtime of a tie-breaker before conceding a 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 28-30, 17-15) Saga victory. Samedy was on fire again to produce 33 points, including three blocks, and win the scoring race with Valdes, who finished with 32, also including three blocks. Hisamitsu Springs kept their runner-up position in the table, now on 14-4 and 39. BlueCats also stayed in their sixth place, on 10-8 and 34, and a better set ratio than third-placed Victorina Himeji.
Himeji had an equally dramatic experience at home against Gunma Green Wings this weekend. Gunma surprised their hosts with a 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 25-19) shutout on Saturday with a match-high 23 points from Polish outside Olivia Rozanski, and pushed them to the overtime of a fifth set on Sunday, before Victorina could partially redeem themselves with a nail-biting 3-2 (21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 16-14) reverse sweep. Italian outside Camilla Mingardi powered the winners with a match-high 31 points, including three blocks. Gunma also kept their fifth place in the table, now on 11-7 and 33.
Astemo Rivale Ibaraki and Kurobe Aqua Fairies traded victories after delivering two five-set battles this weekend. The first match went 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-11) the way of visitors Kurobe. German outside Lena Stigrot was the best scorer of the match with 31 points, including one ace and one block. On Sunday, the home team retaliated with a 3-2 (26-24, 23, 25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-13) victory. Their American opposite Mackenzie May erupted with a fantastic leg-high 43 points, including two aces. Kurobe dropped down a spot, to ninth place on 9-9 and 25, while Astemo remained in 11th, on 5-11 and 17.
Okayama Seagulls achieved their third win since the start of the season, a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18) upset of Saitama Ageo Medics at home on Saturday, with outside hitter Yuzu Nakamoto spearheading the team with 16 points. Opposite Fuyumihaui Okumuoba topped the charts with 21 points for Ageo. On Sunday, Medics got even with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-17) win, led by outside Rina Yamaji (four blocks) and American opposite Izabella Raracz (two blocks) with 20 points apiece. Seagulls’ opposite Rinka Komatsubara emerged as the best scorer of the game with 26 points. Ageo descended one position to 10th place on 8-8 and 23, while Okayama ascended one position to 12th place on 3-15 and 11.
Table leaders NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki took the full six points from their trip to Aranmare Yamagata and improved to 16-2 and 44, leaving the opponents stuck at the bottom of the table, in 14th place on 1-17 and 3. Aranmare managed to take a set away from their mighty visitors on Saturday, when NEC put together a 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21) win with a match-high 20 points from American outside Giovanna Day. Red Rockets finished Sunday’s job in straight sets to celebrate a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-17) victory, this time with Italian opposite Sylvia Nwakalor leading the way as the best scorer with 18 points, including three blocks and an ace.
Queenseis Kariya hammered out two straight-set wins at Toray Arrows Shiga to jump three spots up to seventh place on 9-9 and 29 and push their hosts down to 13th on 3-15 and 9. Outside hitter and captain Hinata Shigihara and her Russian cross-court teammate Sofya Kuznetsova shared the top scorer honors on Saturday with 19 points apiece towards a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) sweep. In Sunday’s 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-19) shutout, Shigihara led the winners with 17 points, including three blocks, while opposite Airi Furukawa put away a match-high 23 points for Toray Arrows.
The SV.League will resume on December 27 after a break related to Japan’s Empress Cup tournament.
