Saturday’s match between NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki and Saitama Ageo Medics already produced a surprise, as the home team was forced to come back from a set down twice during the game before claiming a 3-2 (21-25, 31-29, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13) victory. NEC’s Italian opposite Sylvia Nwakalor contributed a match-high 27 points, including four kill blocks, towards the win. On Sunday, however, the table leaders failed to completely reverse the course of the match after dropping the first two sets, and Ageo snatched an unexpected 3-2 (25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 15-25, 15-11) victory. American opposite Izabella Rapacz led the winners with 17 points, including two blocks and an ace, while NEC’s outside Ai Hirota produced a match-high 25 points, including two blocks. Red Rockets still lead the current standings, now on a 14-2 win-loss ratio and 38 points. Ageo climbed one spot to ninth place on 7-7 and 20.
In another Sunday stunner, second-from-the-bottom Okayama Seagulls defeated their hosts Denso Airybees Koriyama to improve to 2-14 and 8 in 13th place. Before that, on Saturday, Denso mastered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-13) shutout with a match-high 15 points from Brazilian outside Sabrina Machado. In the second match, however, Seagulls got back at Airybees with a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-22, 25-18) victory, led by middle blocker and captain Sora Nagase with 15 points. Denso’s Brazilian opposite Rosamaria Montibeller was the best scorer of that match with an impressive 27 points. Despite that setback, Denso climbed to seventh place on 8-8 and 25.
Saga Hisamitsu Springs also moved up a spot in the table and are now second on 13-3 and 37, and a better set ratio than third-placed Victorina Himeji, after bringing home the full six points from their visit to Kurobe Aqua Fairies, who dropped two positions to eighth place on 8-8 and 22. The first encounter went 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) with three aces and 17 spike kills from American opposite Stephanie Samedy. The second was resolved after four sets, 3-1 (28-26, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14), with Samedy once again emerging as the top scorer, this time with 26 points.
Victorina Himeji gave up the second place to Saga on set ratios after being forced to five sets in one of the matches in their away double header against Queenseis Kariya. In Saturday’s game, Himeji took the three points with a 3-1 (26-24, 25-13, 20-25, 25-19) win on the wings of a match-high 22 points from Italian outside Camilla Mingardi. On Sunday, however, they had to come back from a set down twice before emerging with a 3-2 (14-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 15-10) victory. 30 points put Mingardi on top of the scorers chart again, one point above Kariya’s Russian outside Sofya Kuznetsova. Queenseis fell to 10th place on 7-9 and 23.
Defending champions Osaka Marvelous also wasted a point in the second game of their home double header against Astemo Rivale Ibaraki. After a 3-0 (25-20, 28-26, 25-18) sweep of Saturday’s match with a game-high 18 points from Belgian opposite Lise Van Hecke, on Sunday, they had to turn the course of the match from two sets down to a 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-17, 15-13) victory. Osaka’s Japanese opposite Ameze Miyabe and Astemo’s American striker Mackenzie May shared the top scorer honors of that match with 25 points each. Marvelous stand fourth in the table on 11-5 and 35, while Astemo are 11th on 4-10 and 14.
Gunma Green Wings also wasted a point at home, but in the first of their games against Toray Arrows Shiga, which they won by a hard-fought 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-12). Polish outside Olivia Rozanski contributed a leg-high 35 points, including three blocks and two aces. On Sunday, Gunma secured the full three points with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 28-30, 25-19) victory. This time, outside Momoko Niida led the way with a team-high 19 points, while opposite Airi Furukawa delivered a match-high 24 points for Toray Arrows. Gunma are running in fifth place on 10-6 and 29, while Toray Arrows are third from the bottom, in 12th place on 3-13 and 9.
PFU BlueCats Ishikawa Kahoku put together two home victories over bottom-placed Aranmare Yamagata – 3-1 (20-25, 25-9, 25-12, 25-17) on Saturday with a match-high 25 points from opposite Melissa Valdes and 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-14) on Sunday with a match-high 14 points from outside Miyu Kawazoe. PFU rose to sixth place on 9-7 and 30. Aranmare are stuck in 14th place on 1-15 and 3.
