Voreas Hokkaido surprised their hosts Wolfdogs Nagoya by forcing both games of their double header this weekend to resolutions in overtime tie-breakers and bringing home two points, enough to push away from the bottom of the current standings in the men’s volleyball Daido Life SV.League, which they were stuck to before the start of the sixth leg of action in Japan.

In one of the four double headers played in the SV.League this week, Wolfdogs Nagoya survived two five-set scares to grab two victories over their visitors Voreas Hokkaido, but lost two precious points towards the standings. Still, Nagoya managed to stay in third place, now on a 9-3 win-loss ratio and 25 points, but Voreas were able to rise up one spot from the bottom of the table and are now ninth on 2-10 and 8.

Saturday’s match went 3-2 (25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 19-25, 16-14) Nagoya’s way. Outside hitter Taito Mizumachi fired four aces, raised one kill block and hit 15 points in attack to lead the home team to victory. Estonian outside Mart Tammearu scored a match-high 24 points, including four aces, for Voreas. Sunday’s game was pushed even deeper into tie-breaker overtime before Wolfdogs could celebrate their second win of the weekend, 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 17-15). Opposite Kento Miyaura led the winners with 15 points, including three kill blocks, while his counterpart Chang Yu-Sheng from Chinese Taipei also raised three kill blocks towards a match-high 23 points for Voreas.

The status-quo at the very top of the table did not change, as both leaders – Osaka Bluteon and Suntory Sunbirds Osaka – cruised through their home double headers without dropping a set and improved to 11-1 and 32 each. Bluteon top the standings on a 34-8 set ratio against Suntory Sunbirds’ 34-9.

On Saturday, opposite and captain Yuji Nishida (two aces) and Cuban outside Miguel Lopez (one ace, one kill block) led Osaka Bluteon to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20) sweep of their game against Hiroshima Thunders with 14 points apiece. Hiroshima’s Brazilian opposite Felipe Roque was the best scorer of that match, with 15 points, including three blocks. Nishida contributed a team-high 17 points, including two aces and a block, towards Sunday’s 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 26-24) shutout. This time, American outside Cooper Robinson topped the chart with 19 points, including an ace and a block. Hiroshima dropped a spot from fifth to sixth, on 5-7 and 15.

In front of nearly four thousand spectators in each of the two games, Suntory Sunbirds mastered two shutouts of Nagano Tridents – 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19) on Saturday and 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-15) on Sunday – with two Russians claiming the top scorer honors. Outside Egor Kliuka put away 16 points, including three blocks and an ace, in the first match, while opposite Dmitriy Muserskiy impressed with 23 points, including four blocks and three aces, in the second. Nagano stayed in seventh place, now on 3-9 and 12.

The double header played earlier in the week, on Thursday and Friday, produced two away victories for JTEKT Stings Aichi over Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers. The home team won the first set of the first match, but Aichi took over to celebrate a 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20) win. Two American stars – Sakai’s Matthew Anderson (two blocks, one ace) and Aichi’s Torey DeFalco (one ace) – engaged in a scoring race, which ended in a draw – 23 points each. In the second match, JTEKT Stings took out Blazers in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23), with a match-high 19 points from DeFalco, including two aces. Aichi improved to 8-4 and 24 in fourth place, while Sakai dropped to the bottom of the standings, 10th place, on 2-10 and 6.

The seventh leg of action will offer a full set of five double headers, on Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7.
