Toray Arrows celebrate in front of the home crowd

The very last match of the 10th leg in the men’s volleyball Daido Life SV.League in Japan offered the biggest surprise of the weekend, with Toray Arrows Shizuoka claiming a four-set home victory over JTEKT Stings Aichi on Sunday, after forcing their mighty visitors to a five-set battle on Saturday.

In Saturday’s game between Toray Arrows Shizuoka and JTEKT Stings Aichi, the home team gained a two-set lead before their opponents managed to produce a 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-8) reverse sweep. In a spectacular scoring race between opposites, Toray Arrows’ Russian striker Kirill Klets put up six kill blocks and fired two aces towards an impressive 36-point match high, while French star Stephen Boyer contributed 29 points, including two aces and one block, towards Aichi’s victory. On Sunday, however, Toray Arrows did not allow a similar turnaround to be completed and took a 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21) win with a match-high 24 points from Klets, including two stuffs and two serving points.. The team from Shizuoka moved up a spot in the current standings, to seventh place on a 6-12 win-loss ratio and 18 points, while Stings stayed in fourth place, now on 13-7 and 38.

Tokyo Great Bears managed to upset Wolfdogs Nagoya in both matches this weekend. In the first one, they had to work for five sets before celebrating a 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 26-28, 20-25, 15-10) victory. Outside hitter Rikuto Goto led the way with 23 points, including three kill blocks and two aces. Tokyo’s Polish star opposite Bartosz Kurek impressed with six kill blocks towards a 22-point tally. On Sunday, the home team was more convincing and mastered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-23) shutout. Kurek was the best scorer of the match with three stuffs, two aces and 15 successful swings. Tokyo climbed to fifth place on 9-9 and 26, while Nagoya remained in third on 13-7 and 38.

There was a change at the bottom of the table after Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers achieved two home victories over Nagano Tridents and surpassed them into ninth place on 5-15 and 15, leaving the opponents in 10th on 3-17 and 14. Saturday’s game was resolved in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-20), with Danish opposite Ulrik Dahl leading the way with 17 points, including two aces. Sunday’s duel, however, was pushed to five sets, but the victory once again went Sakai’s way, 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 16-25, 25-23, 15-8). Italian outside Tommaso Rinaldi topped the match chart with 25 points, including two stuffs and an ace, for the winners.

Defending champions and table leaders Suntory Sunbirds Osaka swept both of their away matches at Hiroshima Thunders in straight sets. Saturday’s game finished 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21) with a match-high 16 points, including four kill blocks, from Russian opposite Dmitriy Muserskiy. Sunday’s 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-22) shutout was fueled by best scorer Ran Takahashi. The outside hitter fired four aces and raised three kill blocks towards an 18-point tally. Suntory improved to 19-1 and 55 on top of the standings, while Hiroshima dropped to sixth place on 7-11 and 22.

FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship silver medalists Osaka Bluteon mastered two home wins over Voreas Hokkaido. Opposite Yuji Nishida delivered a match-high 17 points, including two aces, towards Saturday’s 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) sweep and a match-high 25 points, including three aces and two blocks, towards Sunday’s 3-1 (19-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-18) comeback victory. Bluteon remained in second place, now on 16-4 and 46. Voreas fell one position down, to eighth place on 5-13 and 16.

The 11th leg of regular season action will offer a full set of five double headers on January 17 and 18.
