Osaka Bluteon v Hiroshima Thunders

Hiroshima Thunders produced the most surprising result of this weekend’s 15th leg in the men’s volleyball Daido Life SV.League in Japan. In the first of the 10 matches played on Saturday and Sunday, they celebrated a five-set road win over Osaka Bluteon.

Deep into the overtime of the tie-breaker in Saturday’s match between Osaka Bluteon and Hiroshima Thunders, the visitors produced a nail-biting 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 26-28, 29-27, 22-20) shocker, thus putting an end to Osaka’s streak of seven consecutive 3-0 wins in the head-to-head series against Hiroshima in the league. In front of nearly four and a half thousand fans at the Ookini Arena Maishima, American outside hitter Cooper Robinson contributed a match-high 27 points, including two serving aces and two kill blocks.

Bluteon got back at Thunders with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21) victory on Sunday. Opposite and captain Yuji Nishida was the top scorer of the match with 22 points, including three blocks. Middle blocker Larry Evbade-Dan also impressed in net defense with five stuffs under his belt. The FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship silver medalists continue in second place in the current SV.League standings, now on a 23-5 win-loss ratio and 68 points. Hiroshima are fifth on 12-14 and 37.

JTEKT Stings Aichi put together a 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17) road victory in the first match at Tokyo Great Bears on Saturday. French opposite Stephen Boyer led the way with 16 points, including two blocks. American outside hitter Torey DeFalco added another 15, including three blocks and an ace. The home team in this double header took its revenge as well. Tokyo hammered out a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) shutout of Aichi on Sunday, with Polish star opposite Bartosz Kurek on fire with a match-high 23 points. After this exchange of three-point wins, Great Bears remained in sixth place, now on 12-14 and 35, but Stings descended from third to fourth on 17-11 and 49.

Tokyo Great Bears vs. JTEKT STINGS AICHI - Match Highlights

Wolfdogs Nagoya were the team that took over the third place on 17-11 and 51 after two straight-set wins at Toray Arrows Shizuoka, who stayed in seventh, now on 9-17 and 27. Nagoya mastered a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) sweep of their first game on Saturday. Their opposite Kento Miyaura put away two aces and two kill blocks towards a match-high 15 points and shared the top scorer honors with Toray Arrows’ outside Hiroki Ozawa. Sunday’s game went 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-15) with Miyaura topping the scorers chart again, this time with 14 points, including two aces and a block.

Defending champions and table leaders Suntory Sunbirds Osaka were mostly merciless against their visitors, table trailers Nagano Tridents. In the first match, they hammered out a 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-19) shutout in front of almost five thousand spectators at the Asue Arena Osaka, with outside hitter Alain De Armas leading the way with 16 points, including two aces. His cross-court teammate and captain Ran Takahashi shined with five direct points from the serving line. On Sunday, Tridents pushed the third set deep into overtime, but the home team still closed the game in straight sets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 33-31). This time, Takahashi emerged as the best scorer of the match with 20 points, while Russian opposite Dmitriy Muserskiy raised five kill blocks towards a 19-point total. Suntory top the chart on a dominant 27-1 and 78. Nagano are stuck at the bottom, in 10th place on 3-25 and 14.

SUNTORY SUNBIRDS OSAKA vs. VCNA - Match Highlights

Italian outside Tommaso Rinaldi produced four aces and two kill blocks towards a match-high 23 points in Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers’ 3-1 (25-27, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23) home victory over Voreas Hokkaido on Saturday. On Sunday, however, Voreas returned the “favor” with a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-18, 25-23) win of their own. In this one, Taiwanese opposite Chang Yu-Sheng fired four aces and raised two kill blocks towards a match-high 20 points for Voreas. So, the two teams stayed in close proximity to one another in the table. Sakai are eighth on 9-19 and 27, and Voreas are ninth on 7-19 and 22, with two games in hand.

The 16th leg of regular season action next weekend, February 21 and 22, will offer only two double headers on its program.
